Their last outing was at St Andrew's where a late strike from Christophe Berra earned them a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City. please log in to view this image David McGoldrick celebrates scoring the winner for Town against Fulham City meanwhile got off to a rather disappointing start going down 1-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers but have since then kicked into gear with home wins against Watford and Blackburn Rovers. Watford had the misfortune to have defender Joel Ekstrand sent off after just 90 seconds when they came to Carrow Road leaving City to break down a stubborn Hornets rearguard which in the end they did comfortably 3 goals to nil. Against Blackburn, City had the early misfortune to go a goal behind to a first minute wonder strike from Rovers' Tom Cairney, however the Canaries re-grouped and two goals from Lewis Grabban, one a penalty and Bradley Johnson were enough to see off the visitors. please log in to view this image Lewis Grabban tucks away the rebound after Blackburn's Paul Robinson had saved his original penalty kick Recent form Ipswich Town WLLD Norwich City LWW Match History The first derby held between the two clubs was on 15 November 1902, when both sides were still playing at amateur level. The Norfolk & Suffolk League fixture was played in Norwich and finished 1–0 to 'The Citizens'. City were the first of the two to turn professional in 1905, Ipswich following in 1936. Ipswich were elected to the Football League in 1938 and the first league game between the two clubs was on 2 September 1939 in League Division Three (South). The game was played at Portman Road with the match finishing 1–1, although the league was abandoned that year due to the outbreak of the Second World War. please log in to view this image Town won this two-legged final in 1973 Two of the more notable meetings between the two clubs have come in cup competitions. In the 1972–73 season Ipswich beat Norwich 4–2 on aggregate to win the two legged Texaco Cup, with 2–1 wins in both games. In 1985 the clubs met in the semi-final of the League Cup with a place in the Wembley final at stake. Ipswich won the first leg 1–0 at Portman Road, but Norwich scored early in the return leg at Carrow Road to level the tie. With extra-time looming, Steve Bruce scored a late winner to send Norwich to Wembley. please log in to view this image Steve Bruce wheels away in delight after netting his late winner in the 1985 Milk Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg The East Anglian derby has been contested 107 times in competitive games, 55 of which have been played at Ipswich and 52 at Norwich. The clubs have also played each other in friendlies and testimonials. The highest attendance in the derby at Portman Road is 35,077 in a First Division match in September 1975 while Carrow Road hosted 39,890 spectators in an FA Cup match in January 1962. John Wark is Ipswich's leading goalscorer in the derby with nine goals, while Hugh Curran remains Norwich's top scorer with five, a record that has stood since 1968. Overall the two rivals have met 138 times, Ipswich having the slight upper hand with 59 wins to Norwich's 53 The most recent matches were in the 2010–11 season, when Norwich won both games, 4–1 at Carrow Road and 5–1 at Portman Road. Highest aggregate result The highest aggregate score in a match is seven goals, Ipswich winning 3–4 in a Division 2 match at Carrow Road in 1968–69. (unless of course you combine the two leagues games in 2010-11 ) They played for both clubs Clive Baker, Keith Bertschin, John Deehan, Louie Donowa, Alan Lee, Kevin Lisbie, Andy Marshall, Johnny Miller, Trevor Putney, Clive Woods. Did you know? Ryan Bennett, City's £3.2M signing from Peterborugh was a youth player at Town Former Ipswich and England star Kevin Beattie did scouting work for Mike Walker when he was the Canaries manager. Ian Crook was involved in a "controversial" signing for Town in June 1996 he never actually played for Ipswich before re-joining City. The late Justin Fashanu had unsuccessful trials with Ipswich when he tried to resurrect his career in 1990. Scorer of a controversial 'handball' derby goal, Danny Haynes trialled with City before joining Town in the of spring 1994. ….and finally According to the Football Rivalries Report 2008, the East Anglian derby is the second fiercest rivalry in England after the Black Country derby between West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers. So to tomorrow's match, City will go into the game arguably as favourites as on paper they have a far stronger squad than the Blues but (and here come the clichés), 'football isn't played on paper' and 'the form book goes out the window on derby day'. Spot on KIO, excellent stuff If I'm going to be picky - which I am, it's showing a half-time score of 0-0. You mustn't wish your life away like that and anyway, it'll be 0-2 to us at half-time Let's just hope the thread doesn't get trashed / derailed by our 'country cousins'
An Excellent read KIO Well done Fella I have a funny feeling that there's gonna be tears before bed time tomorrow!
On TWTD Harry from Bath has put together another great piece on tomorrow's game. http://www.twtd.co.uk/ipswich-town-news/25642/roll-on-saturday-roll-over-ipswich--notes-for-norwich
All I hope for is an excellent game that is decided fair and square, as opposed to being 'railroaded' by some dreadful decisions by the match officials. I'd love us to win by any margin, but if we could sneak a draw, then our travelling fans could sing - 'Top of the league ....... etc!!!!' Good Luck jwm, warky and all ITFC fans who post on our board.
There are some bitter, bitter Binners in the comments section JWM. I think a closet Canary like you needs to give them a bit of a schooling in getting facts right!
I couldn't agree more! I'm starting to feel the butterflies already so god only knows how I'm going to be feeling tomorrow morning on my drive up from West Sussex. My eldest has never experienced the East Anglian Derby before and he's dead excited eventhough he knows that we are the underdogs!
I'm aiming to leave the house at about 7:30 ish to get to Ipswich by around 9 so that I can get into the front Car Park!
All I hope is we don't get something like a Bryan Gunn 'air-kick' or Gary Megson 'OG' ! However another Ipswich non-penalty (remember the penalty that never was), now that would be funny
