Congratulations to the big man, this recognition is well deserved as he took the baton from Ted Bates and over-saw the most successful period in the Saints history. He brought some of the biggest stars in English football to the club and his teams always played with style and panache...I fell in love with the club watching his teams play and will always be grateful for his contribution to our history.

Depending on what happens in the next 2 or 3 years, Nigel Adkins has got a chance to become, in my opinion, the best Saints manager ever. For now, though, that crown definitely sits on Lawrie Mac's head.

Agree with all of the above. I'm sure those posters have personally watched a Ted Bates team play as well, and Ted's teams were every bit as entertaining without perhaps the ultra sturdy backbone of defence. Then again, Ted never had the personnel. This is what Lawrie brought. He was a charmer. He sweet talked Peter Osgood in so he could play alongside Micky and then it was just a matter of getting the others coming in reliably to replace the stars leaving. As Lawrie said, he never had them all at once, but what an A list of footballers that went through the team during his time. He truly made Southampton a big club in a little ground.
