having watched the full F1 careers of both drivers i personally think both had / have a similar flaw that prevented / prevent them from being from the very top drawer of F1 drivers ,

both were and are brilliant racers , brundle could mix it with the very great senna in F3 in 1983 , as he did with bellof in the tyrell during 1984 and did the same with schumacher in the benettone during 1992 so clearly martin was not without considerable talent but ironically never won a single F1 race ,

button in his 2nd year at mclaren and with a little more input into this years car would now seem to have hamiltons number come sunday afternoon and maybe , just maybe in race trim could give the two top drivers of the current era vettel and alonso a run for there money in equal machinery ,

however ---- the one flaw that both brundle and button share/d is the blistering one lap qualifying pace that in effect meant they had far to much to do of a sunday afternoon which very often put them at a disadvantage when the lights turned green - ( yes i know button achieved a couple of poles in his perfect brawn during the first few races of 2009 )

as i said i believe this one single flaw prevented brundle from really elevating himself above the rank of a quick journeyman during his career and it may well hamper button in his quest for a further WDC -

would be interested to hear if you agree with my little theory --

Martins problem is that he never got that chance to drive a top car just like Jenson's first 10 years in F1. I feel a bit bad for Martin that he never got the chance Jenson did in 09 though. He gave Senna a great fight in 83.

So long as Button qualifies on the first few rows then it is not a problem; if he is qualifying on the 4th row of the grid then that is a problem, but he is not. The only thing hampering Button winning another WDC is that the Red Bull is just too fast. Come race day he has been the only driver challenging Vettel recently. You qualify for show, but you race for dough.

As for Brundle I just thought he was very unlucky in his career, never really got a proper break.

must admit the one year that brundle had a good car was in the 92 bennetone , it was just unfortunate that the williams at times was close to a couple of seconds quicker than everything else --

i suppose in F1 you create your own career breaks , martin i believe because of his one flaw hindered himself from creatating a good one --

Brundle's record in that Benetton was pretty darn good. Scored in something like 9 consecutive races, when points were only up to 6th, not the everyone must score 10th of now, including quite a few podiums.

Seems bizarre he was then dropped for Riccardo Patrese in 1993.

No offense martial, but can't you use capital letters?
It's just sometimes your grammar makes it hard to read what you are saying.

what did you expect saint with briatore and ross brawn at benettone , it would not surprise me if for 93 they did not want a strong driver in the other benettone seat -

we all know that micheal had the luxury of team orders and weak team mates for most of his career with his buddy brawn , very likely 93 was just the start of it ----

it does not help the harmony on the forum when you act like a school prefect to purposely critisize people"s spelling errors especially when i cant get my spell checker to work ,
no doubt you have a hidden agenda for doing that -trust me i can smell BS a mile away ,

just stick to talking F1 with me and we will get along just sweet in the future -

    I'm a massive Button fan and I think he lacks two things;

    1. One lap pace that translates into front row grid positions.
    2. Killer Instinct!

He is very calculated and appears very calm in most situations, but feel that sometimes he could just be that little bit more authoritive. Over a season this and higher quali positions could be the difference in winning another WDC. However, I think that Vettle aside, Quali is pretty much of muchness now. In relation to JB's pole positions and quali on 2009, take into account that fuel corrected he was generally quicker and the Brawn was only a shade faster than the RB, they just didnt maximise their strengths!

Ask a sensible question, get a rude answer.......

This years Monaco comes into mind where Jenson just laid back and hoped Fernando and Seb collided with each other. Maybe he does lack the killer instinct a tiny bit, but sometimes it's for the best as in Lewis' case this year where a few risky overtakes have ended up with contact.

So basically, Button has a flaw and.....????

You seem to be saying this as if other drivers don't have at least one flaw too? So because you might perceive that Jenson has one flaw he's at a disadvantage that will stop him winning another WDC, which would only make sense if you think that other drivers that he's up against have no flaws?

This is the one last bastion of attack for people (usually Hamilton fans, not saying that you are one) who want to try to undermine and attack Button. All the other comments and complaints have been brushed aside.

He will be destroyed by Lewis.
    He wont win @ McLaren
He can't win in the dry
He can't out pace Lewis in the race
    He can't out score Lewis
    He can't overtake
    He has no killer instinct
    He can't out qualify Lewis

What next? He'll never sing karaoke as well as Lewis?

Every driver has their strength and weakness, I don't know why people expect any driver to be perfect.

Breaking my post amnesty for three points/observations before retreating back to my hole.

    1. If it came to a karaoke-off, My money would be on Button. I'm pretty sure that he'd nail 'My Way' after a handful of Sakes.

    2. From now on, all forms of print and electronic communication should be clearly sans grammar as it's 'BS'.

    3. Michael Schumacher is the first (and only) driver to undeservedly win 7 WDCs. Brawn, Flav and co obviously wanted a talentless, crooked chinned German to win rather than putting somebody useful in the car... Makes perfect sense. Good job that one didn't backfire on them, hey?

    :)

Others drivers have flaws, but lacking speed on Saturdays is a lot more significant than most other flaws because it limits chances in the race - a good example of this can be seen with the Merc drivers this year - Schumacher can match and sometimes beat Rosberg on race pace but his poor qualifying lets him down and Rosberg usually ends up with the higher finishing position.

Having said that, I'm not sure whether Button's qualifying weakness could stop him winning a championship. I think the race performance of his teammate and the competitiveness of other top cars would be more important to his WDC chances.

I've always thought a frantic dash for 1 lap gives a false view anyway. Race length shows class.

I dont think Jenson has a horrific lack of Qualy pace at all. Not this year at least. Since Hungary he's only qualified outside of the top 3 twice. The "communication error" at spa and Inidia where he had to lift passing Massa's crash. The gap between him and lewis (someone who many stilll consider the best for raw pace) has visable decrease and is now often less than a 1/10 of a second.

    Gap at Hungary. 0.046
    Italy 0.052
    Singapore. -0.005 (Lewis one lap)
Japan -0.142 (lewis only does one lap, Jenson 0.009 of pole)
Korea 0.306 (poor race from Jenson)

Average in the second half of the year is 0.05 If you discount the two where Lewis did only one lap it is still less than a tenth.

    Alternatively, some might prefer this…

An interesting topic for debate Martial. Button has known for a very long time that his greatest weakness is his qualifying. However, as has already been noted; having made this a focal point of his game, he has made considerable improvement - especially in the latter half of 2011. Nonetheless, your comparison between him and Brundle is interesting, and you may have a point or two!

    P.S. As for grammar,
Martial: surely you could see the point Sam was politely trying to make - even if you think him pedantic? You are clearly intelligent. You must surely know that communication works best when one's sentiments are most accurately understood? Making an effort for the recipient is not only more likely to convey your message; it is also a plain, common courtesy! Appropriate capitalisation is part of the accepted norm of the written word; and is therefore not redundant.
