Stop this Newcastle obsession and judge me later, Sunderland boss Bruce tells fans

Steve Bruce has launched an angry tirade at what he described as a 'media frenzy', dismissing criticism following Sunderland's poor start to the season as 'over the top'.

And he insisted: 'Do I feel under pressure? No – under pressure for what?'

The Sunderland manager is determined to silence supporters' doubts by improving the team's playing record.

Feeling the heat: Sunderland manager Steve Bruce (left) has come under fire

'I know I am capable and I know I have to go and get a couple of results to quieten the storm.'

A visit to Arsenal today followed by a home game next weekend against struggling Bolton Wanderers, whose boss Owen Coyle who shares Bruce's desperate need for breathing spaces, are crucial games for the Black Cats.

Recent boardroom changes with Niall Quinn stepping down as chairman in favour of American owner Ellis Short only heightened the speculation over the manager's future before Short announced unqualified support for him.

But Bruce admitted he is at a loss to comprehend the justification of the clamour surrounding him and the team.

'I think a lot of it has been unjust and unfair,' he declared. 'But I've known that's what the North East is – that's how difficult it is for everybody.'
Spreading their wings: Rivals Newcastle have flourished so far this season

Spreading their wings: Rivals Newcastle have flourished so far this season

Another home defeat against neighbours and deadly rivals Newcastle United six weeks ago triggered much of the criticism but the Sunderland boss insisted that fans should put the result into a wider perspective.

'I believe that, when we lost against Newcastle, that was when it started and I haven't been able to quell the fire because the results haven't been there for us,' he said. 'All of a sudden last year (when Newcastle took four points from their two league games) is regurgitated but we must have done something right because we finished tenth.

'We finished above Newcastle. Judge us by the end of it (this season). Let's see when their bad run comes. That doesn't faze me at all because they've had a good start – good luck to them. But to be judged solely against Newcastle? Hang on a minute – we've finished above them in the last three years.

'Is it just to be judged on finishing above Newcastle? Well, I'm sorry. There's a bigger picture than that. Unfortunately – if we keep thinking that way, then whoever is manager here – or at Newcastle – they will find the same difficulties.
Derby woe: Sunderland were defeated by Newcastle back in August

Derby woe: Sunderland were defeated by Newcastle back in August

'It is out of proportion here. It's because the support for the clubs is second to none. They haven't won anything for years but they still support their team which is absolutely admirable. And that's why I came here. Can I be the one who gives them something to sing about? At the moment I can't. Surely we've got to be better than just finishing above Newcastle for the bragging rights. Surely the aim has to be to go forward and win an FA Cup. Who knows – it might be our year? We're capable of winning five or six games.

'This summer I knew it was going to be absolutely chaotic. We had five loan players and, for one reason or another, we only kept one. So I knew it was going to be a huge turnover at the club – staring all over again if you like. I knew it was going to be difficult and we needed to hit the ground running – but we haven't.

'I don't mind criticism but I think its been over the top. Then again, coming here, I always knew everything is sensationalised more than anywhere else in the country.

'I'm under pressure to be a Premier League manager and I've done it for nearly eleven years now – not many people have done that either. We finished tenth last year, the third best finish in 50-odd years – so we haven't exactly been winning the Champions League here year in, year out.

'We're Sunderland and let's not try to get above our station here. The expectation is ridiculous. I understand we have been beaten in a few games.'

He is really starting to get on my ****ing nerves, I wish he'd just shut the **** up, he HAS not done a good job here, he's done OK, no miracles, what he's achieved was the bare minimum.

He clearly has no ambition either if how we've been playing and the results we've been getting are passable and we shouldn't complain? We lose and the players 'need to gel' we beat Stoke and he's a ****ing genius, **** me!

Stop talking so much **** Bruce and accept that we are not playing to an acceptable standard!

    Rant over lol

I'm starting to think Bruce is a class A troll. I'm struggling to remember the last interview with him that he didn't mention losing the derby or Newcastle at all <laugh>.

Funny that I had the distinct impression we were away to Bolton next week. Typical of that paper. If they can't get the fixtures right it makes you wonder about the truth of anything they say.

Bruce is beginning to have that "sick of hearing the same old ****e week in week out" feel to his interviews.

He thinks its unfair to talk about the form from last year and is often quoted saying we've only played 4 games, 5 games etc. However, he soon starts to mention last season when it suits him and his excuse making.

I'm also sounding like a broken record when I say he is a clueless buffoon, desperately scratching round for points and a settled team but its true imo. He is failing our club badly.

If if thinks the derby games are not important, then I despise him even more and it only adds to my belief he is adversely effecting those games between us on purpose.

We will merely stagnate at best and be relegated at worst under this manager and the sooner Short comes to this conclusion as well, the better it will be for us all.

Bruce is full of excuses but no answers and no direction. It's getting so that I can't even stand listening to the ****er these days.

Wonder what pile of ****e excuse the black & white twat uses after tomorrows flop?

    Can't wait.

In 2 weeks time we have Darren Bastard Bent back at the SOL. In my entire life, I can't think of any other former player that will be as hated and despised as much as he will be. Owens return to sid James will be nothing compared to the barrage of abuse Bent will receive in 2 weeks time.

I don't want to start any arguments with Sunderland fans here, but one of things Sunderland did right last season was having Darren Bent. A quick look at the table on 16th Jan 2011 (Bent left on the 18th) shows they had 34 points after 23 games, Bent scoring 11 of the 26 goals. 14 games later they had 47 points and 46 goals. A very respectable finish, but Bent had a lot to do with it.

Atleast you got a fair amount of money for him. Owen stalled over a new contract until he was ready to go for **** all and then left immediately. We could've atleast got a few quid for a player we bought for £18m and paid £110k a week to for 3 or 4 years.

Bent's departure was the catalyst for the poor year we've had since and the absolute reason Bruce now finds himself under so much pressure today. Bents goals masked the weaknesses we have under fat lad and his leaving with no replacement brought in over the summer, has left up vulnerable and in some peril.

If he scores the winner in 2 weeks time, there will be ****ing hell to pay imo.

But who is a suitable replacement for Bent? I may be wrong but was he not the best striker to play for Sunderland since Phillips? Players like that are hardly ten a penny!

With regards to Benty scoring the winner, isn't that just the way it goes in football? If I had a fiver for every goal an ex player scored against us, I'd be ****ing laughing. I'm honestly surprised we've gone three games against Sunderland without Bramble scoring.

    Sunderland above Newcastle

"We've finished above Newcastle three seasons in a row now! :)"

    Newcaste above Sunderland

"Stop comparing us to Newcastle! <wah>"

This just about sums it up..

A bit of passion and a bit of flair (not quinny's disco pants type) would be nice..

Not the same old self pittying interviews all the time.

Bollocks if Mr Wenger, ever gets the boot, he's the type we need.. (Arsenal fans don't realise just how lucky they are)

Talking of ex players, how is Milner recieved, anyone seen his goal against Villa...

This!! ****ing annoying, we lose it's NEVER his fault, but we win and the guy thinks he's the next SAF. Just like how he keeps going on about finishing tenth, which was bloody flulkey

About as close as Charlie Sheen becoming a Mormon.

Chester le Street sits on the bank of the greatest river in the Christian world - the Wear - and thus everyone born and bred there is a proud wearsider. Only those unfortunates who are taken at birth by the devil himself turn out to be the lost souls of the craas.

County Durham, Chester lad and Red & White and proud.

Does this clarify my position? Lol
