About bloody time... SUNDERLAND fans have laid the lie to the claims that Steve Bruceâs Geordie origins cost him his job as Black Catsâ boss. An urban myth is in danger of taking hold that Bruce was doomed almost as soon as he took over at the Stadium of Light because of his Geordie heritage. Tell that to Bob Stokoe â the Geordie whose statue stands outside the ground. And if people claim that was then, this is now; well, tell that to Jack Colback â the Tynesider who Sunderland fans have taken to their hearts. Alan Shearer on Match of the Day recently was perpetuating this nonsense that Bruce was always on tricky ground whenever Sunderland lost because of his Newcastle roots. And those who answered our survey made it clear that Bruce being a Geordie had little to do with his dismissal and that results and tactics did. To the question: âWhat was the biggest factor behind fans turning against Steve Bruce?â a staggering 94 per cent selected either poor results and performances (77 per cent) or team selection and tactics (17 per cent). Only four per cent suggested it might be his Geordie roots. Another issue in which Sunderland fans answered as one, was the question of whether the club was right to sack Bruce when they did. An utterly comprehensive 96 per cent said owner-chairman Ellis Short was right to wield the axe, while four per cent suggested the manager should have stayed to see the job through. There was a bit more of a split when the timing of the sacking was raised. That same tiny majority â five per cent in this case â believed Bruce was sacked too soon, while the majority, 51 per cent, thought he was sacked at the right time and a similar number, 44 per cent, believe the chop should have come sooner and that Bruce was allowed to stay too long. He was absolutely rubbish, totally inept and for some reason the happy clappers still supported him after his no one up front tactic vs Brighton. He is the 'Baldrick of managers with a cunning plan like that. However, I will slightly contradict things by saying he is a fat geordie bastard and i never wanted the obese idiot at any time. I am now waiting for Colback to betray us like the rest of the devious underhand ****ers.
We all know the truth is simply this :- Bruce wasn't sacked for being a Geordie , he was sacked for not being very good at his job. Now move along , there's nothing to see here.
Oh dear, how many more times, BRUCE HAS NEVER EVER SAID HE WAS SACKED FOR BEING A GEORDIE ony some of our fans seem intent on spreading the lie.
Bruce did say something that made sense in the mid 80's when newcastle played man united when kevin scott was playing c half for newc and bruce was c half for man utd. In the papers he said that although scott played for newc he wasn't a geordie and he was right as KS was born in easington and lived in a nearby pit village. Never at any time did KS ever claim to be a geordie btw. However, since sky sports and the media have constantly promoted newcastle (for some reason, even invented a term 'toon' that i never ever heard in 70's/80's) and have pulled off a massive con trick of indoctrination and deren brown style misdirection that has convinced the gullible and easy led to support newc even though they are much closer to sunderland and hartlepool. If you are from Shotto, peterlee, horedn, blackhall easington et cetera and support mags you have been conned. In conclusion steve bruce is still a wnker
Syd, He never said he was 'sacked for being a Geordie'. He DID say that we didn't give him a real chance, and elements of our support never accepted him because of his Geordie roots. He knows full well how the press would spin that, he knew what he was doing. The man was hapless, and were Quinn not such a gent, he'd have went March of the previous year. I have no gripe with him, and wish him well.
My point is, and will always be, by all means have a go but the constant lies, yes I said lies, will always get me going the other way. I have read most of his interviews and he says his Geordie roots became a problem when things turned bad and the abuse was unacceptable, I agree with him 100%. My last word I think, funny how many say I pleased he has gone but continue to talk about him. The future for me.
no truck with bruce, let's all move on and good luck to him. that being said, (and give him is due, he kept his mouth shut for long enough for MON to get us stable), he did eventually come out with a lot of nonsense implying his heritage and past soundbites meant we would never accept him, which was a complete falsehood. his results did him in, plain and simple.
