I know it's an old topic, but it is still current and makes me angry. I guess the lack of movement now is that they are either just happy to collect their money or want Pompey to pay up their contracts so they can move on. Either way they are hanging the club out to dry. It is time they lived in the real world, took account of the clubs situation. Have they any understanding that they earn as much in a week as most supporters earn in a year - or earn in a year as much as many earn in a lifetime? Their actions are greedy and demonstrate all that is wrong in football at the moment.

Rant started !!

I totally agree. Even being a saints fan I feel these 2 players are personifying todays footballers and what they stand for - money! The more money these guys get paid the less respected they become but they don't see it like that. Brown and Hughes seem to be the worst of the bunch but is that because of the situation they have been placed in? After all they were offered these contracts in the first place.

If I were them, I would cancel the clause and play out the season at the original rate. But that's footballers today!

It also highlights how rubbish modern contracts can be. how nice it would be if there was a standard contract for everyone, the only differences would need to be the length and the payoff

My point is not about the contracts - which are carp - more the lack of goodwill by Brown and Hughes. Our club are having to waste £50k a week in them, in our current wage structure that is 5 decent players. How different our squad might be if they had some decency!

But the fact, that these modern day contracts have no limits to their intricacies, is why those two find themselves where they are. And be able to sit back and watch the money roll in.

As Blur might have said.

Modern life is a load of old rubbish.

While I sympathise with your frustrations over this issue I don't think you can blame the players for the contracts they and the club negotiated. Would the same people who expect the players to forfeit their monies be happy if the club increased ticket prices to cover the cost of clauses in their contracts. I'm betting not, I know I wouldn't.

Right - You can't blame the players for the contracts, but you can blame them for their selfishness and lack of realism. I am not even saying take a pay cut, just forego a payrise / contract extension and keep playing. For heaven's sake they know the state the club's in.

No I would not advocate a ticket price rise - that hits ordinary fans. That is the crux of the matter these two are taking the p!ss out of fans who earn a fraction of what they do. Millions in this country are having to face the reality of pay cuts/job losses, so yes I am saying take to them get a dose of reality and stop being greedy.

Welcome to the world of have and have nots NEBlue.

I wonder, do you regularly attend Fratton Park? If so by your logic the next time you purchase a ticket and the club say thanks for purchasing and now we are going to give your ticket to an unfortunate supporter who can’t afford to, that’ll be alright by you.

SettheSTandard - your standards stink as does your logic. The argument is around the selfishness and greed of these players. I have absolutely no problem with people earning money, I do have a problem with people taking the p!ss. What do they have to lose by forgoing their contract clauses - it is obvious that the club cannot afford them, but are having to pay these two for nothing in return. What do you advocate - pay them for doing nothing or play them and give them an unsustainable salary?

Call me old fashioned NEBlue but I believe in honouring a contract. I’m sorry you feel that standard stinks, Never mind it tells me all I need to know about yours.

Yeah the word honour comes into it - honour a contract or honour a relationship? There is no honour in sticking to a contract that makes someone else suffer - and that is what they are doing. I have renegotiated contracts to my detriment when others have been unable to meet them due to unforeseen circumstances. Where is the honour in forcing someone to stick to such an agreement?

I think it is the people who write the contracts in the first place who have lost it. I think the contracts are ridiculous, but you have to ask, when discussing loyalty, what about when the boot is on the other foot. If a player spends a half a season unable to play due to injury, do you think that they would agree to extend a players contract on the original terms for another season because they wanted to be loyal. And us fans, are a bit like that. Loyalty? How many times have I read on the boards something along the lines of, "yeah, he has been great for us, but he's past it now, get rid of him and free up the wage bill for someone younger"
I don't really blame the players for sticking to the letter of a contract which they have honoured and someone was dumb enough not to insert clauses to cover eventualities such as relegation. Of course, I am sure all of you would happily write of a third of your income for the club you love.......wouldn't you?
