Great news when fit he played like he was ten years younger. could be completing with Austin for a spot which would be good or could potentially give us the nastiest centre mid partnership in the Championship! either way and regardless of age I think he deserves another year and probably not even on a revised contract!
No-one would want to play against a CM partnership of Austin and Brown! Although I think it's probably more realistic that they'll be covering for each other for suspensions.
Amonst all the Grayson signings that were garbage, this one was the one that got to me. The first time SG went in for him he knocked us back because he had 12-months left on his contract and he was on good money. He knew he'd never get another game for Pompy due to a wage rise clause in his contract, which meant one more game triggered a wage rise. Pompy were in the crap financially yet rather than play regular football elsewhere he hung it out for big wages for doing nothing. That's not the way to do things, and yet when we got him on a freebie later he hadn't kicked a ball for almsot a year and came to us because nobody else wanted him. He was garbage and only started to put a shift in when Warnock arrived, and was one of our better players at the back end. He's messed about since deciding if he'd accept our offer and as nothing has turned up, he's decided to sign an extention. Ok he'll be a good addition, but I question his loyalty to the cause because he strikes me as a money grabbing git.
Every potential contract at his age is the last one, cant blame him wanting to set himself up for the rest of his life really. I bet he has no intention to do a few hours in tescos to make the ends meet! That being said, I totally understand your point of view. Ideally you want players who would put there nuts on the line for the club they are playing for but if Brown continues to do what he is paid to do and do that even on reduced wages, then that shows us he is commited to the campaign
Exactly. I just don't understand why people continue to expect loyalty from footballers. Look at Modric at Spurs. Last year he tried everything for a move to Chelsea. This year its started again with Real Madrid interested despite him having signed a new contract. Maybe its time fans looked on these players less adoringly and simply as temporary employees of the club. Thats what they really are
The main point about Brown that I was trying to get accross, is that he knew pompy were in the crap, and he would rather sit on his arse even if it meant the club going into administration. He should have wanted to get some game time in and put himself in the shop window, but no he wasted 12-months and no game time so lost sharpness and fitness, and thats why he was garbage when he first arrived. Someone nearing the end of their career should want to show what he can do, not just fester away for selfish reasons. So although this new deal with Leeds is good, I still don't have any time for the bloke, and I'm sure pompy fans won't miss him as he added to their financial problems.
Come on let's be honest, you are nearing the end of your career, you are not sure if it will be your last year. Do you take a pay cut and play a few games or sit in the reserves getting high wages because your club agreed to some crazy fee arrangement? Is it Browns fault that Portsmouth agreed to such a silly fee arrangement, were Portsmouth trying to get him on the cheap in the first place...
Doc, the guy was simply working to the terms of his contract. It was Pompey that chose not to play him, to save themselves a contrctual lump of money. They could have sold him on, but didn't. We had the same issue with Eirik Bakke & Seth Johnson. Can't say I blame any of them. All midfielders paid to be bloody minded & win, and that's exactly what they all did - refused to give in & fought to the death. Personally, I can't fault them. They won their fights!
