Stumbled across this pleasant vid on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVZGKyB2KcA&feature=related) :huh:and it made me wonder where our North East derby stands in comparison to others throughout the UK. Before seeing this video I had never really thought of the Birmingham - Villa derby as that big but it seems I was wrong!<confused>

What are your views? Where does our derby rank in comparison to the London derbies and the Midlands/ Manchester/ Merseyside derbies?

I think in terms of passion and the number of fans attending the games, ours is definitely up there. We are two separate cities, with a history of intense rivalry outside football and the fact there are no other major cities/football teams nearby makes for a very heated rivalry. Villa-Brum doesn't even sell out at either ground half the time, despite the fact their city is bigger than Newcastle and 5unde1and combined and their grounds are both smaller than our two up here - there's bother because their fans are idiots, not because they are particularly passionate about football. ManUre - Bin Dippers is a big one in terms of rivalry and fan base but they both have rival teams within their own cities anyway so it shouldn't really count! Celtic- Rangers is the biggest in Britain I'd say, again its for reasons other than football though.
