    Bristol City v Brentford

Bristol City defender Jay Dasilva is expected to retain his place for the visit of Brentford after making his first start for almost five months in Sunday's win against Luton.

Nathan Baker and Sammie Szmodics remain sidelined for the Robins.
Bees boss Thomas Frank could give Joel Valencia a start after using the winger as a substitute three times since his recovery from a shoulder injury.
Sergi Canos and Nikos Karelis are again set to miss out with knee injuries.

    Match facts
    • Bristol City have won just one of their past 11 league matches against Brentford, a 1-0 victory in October 2018.
    • Brentford have won four of their past five away league matches against Bristol City since a 1-0 defeat in March 2007.
    • City have won their past five home league games played on New Year's Day, between 1990 and 2011.
    • Brentford are unbeaten in their past five league matches on New Year's Day since a 2-1 League One defeat by Swansea in 2007.
    • Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has only won one of his 10 games against Brentford across all competitions, although he has not lost in the three games since Thomas Frank became the Bees boss.

Let's be fair, it's City, so anything is possible, and no result imaginable would surprise any of us if we're being honest

Game over after 13 minutes, he had to go for that challenge anyway as we have given the ball away again, defending so pedestrian

Pathetic, and enough time and money has now been wasted on what we have which is a below average team. There's talk of a striker being brought in but we need a whole new squad !!!!!!!!!!!

    Johnson has to go

    Report: Bristol City 0-4 Brentford

City felt the pain of going down to ten men as Brentford ran riot in BS3 on New Year’s Day.

Bryan Mbuemo stroked the ball in to give the Bees an early advantage, while City’s afternoon was made all the harder when defender Ashley Williams was dismissed for a mistimed tackle on Ollie Watkins.

Saîd Benrahma ensured Brentford would extend their lead before the break, while Watkins was at the double in the second period to round off a poor start to 2020 for the Robins.

The result sees Johnson’s side 11th in the Sky Bet Championship table.

Korey Smith returned to the City starting line-up, replacing Ádám Nagy in Lee Johnson’s only starting XI change from three days previously.

But it wouldn’t be a repeat performance from that 3-0 win over Luton, in fact it panned out to be an opening 18 minutes to forget for the home side.

Brentford were ahead inside the sixth minute after a long punt from goalkeeper David Raya. The route-one pass was controlled by Watkins, who bundled his way through in the area, and despite the best effort of Williams and Tomas Kalas, the ball broke kindly for Mbeumo who struck the opener from close range.

Things turned from bad to worse when Williams was shown a straight red card. He had not long been shown the yellow for an off-the-ball incident but his challenge on Watkins was deemed a sending off offence, as he brought the Bees forward down on the edge of the area.

With the man advantage, Brentford soon doubled their lead though Bentley did all he could to prevent it. The former Bees shotstopper parried the initial strike from Mathias Jensen, denying Watkins on the follow up but couldn’t help the ricochet which fell invitingly for Benrahma.

Taylor Moore’s introduction for Niclas Eliasson saw a change of shape as Lee Johnson looked for a way back into the game. His winger Marley Watkins had been a positive in City’s ranks though and nearly got on the scoresheet as City looked to halve the deficit. The chance came after Famara Diédhiou held up play, he played in Watkins who managed a shot on target but Raya equal to it.

Jay Dasilva struck a low shot which was comfortable for Raya, while Christian Nørgaard went close with a scissor kick but the Bees were largely in control at the break.

City looked to grow in confidence after the brea but Thomas Frank’s side would have the better of the chances with Watkins. His headed inches wide from a Benrahma cross, while Andreas Weimann’s error played in the forward and only the recovering Kalas ended up putting the striker off when he looked to take the ball around Bentley.

Johnson looked for fresh legs with 20 minutes remaining, bringing on Nagy for Watkins with hope still in the contest.

Still the Bees had a buzz about them and a block from Kalas forced another goal-bound Watkins header out for a corner, from which Bentley produced a good save at his near post to deny Ethan Pinnock.

City’s final change came in the form of Rodri for Weimann with City needing to find a way back into the game, however they were dealt another blow moments later as Brentford struck their third. Bees substitute Jan Žamburek latched on to a ball in the penalty area and his squared pass was perfect for Watkins, who tapped home from close range.

And the pair would combine again with just minutes left on the clock. Watkins met his teammates’ cross once more, forcing a save from Bentley initially, though the forward made no mistake with the rebound.

City return to BS3 on Saturday with the arrival of Shrewsbury Town in the Emirates FA Cup third round.

For the first time, I am beginning to think LJ maybe cannot take this team any further forward. The last month has been dire.

I've been on the fence and defended him plenty of times. But his comments regarding we matched them for 70 minutes between 2nd and 3rd goal was pointless. Yes they didn't score but it was never like we were going to either and spent most of it backs to the wall.
Struggling to understand the logic of high long throws throughout the game when their CB's towered over our attack.

That was not a good day to start the New Year and it must surely bring in to question whether we need to look for a new manager or stick with L.J. Looking back over his tenure there were many, including myself, who were asking for his head on several occasions due to poor results and particularly after a lengthy losing streak. If you look at the league table it shows that we are still in with a shout and yet the annual cracks are reappearing which concerns me for the remainder of the season and forward from there. I have always had a strong belief in Lee after his time at Ashton Gate and all the crap he took from the supporters but when he was appointed manager I gasped and said that I didn't think he was up to the task and each year there were second guesses about his appointment.

The great signings we got all hyped up about have gone to sleep and the formations that worked have been shelved along with some players who will never get a fair shake of the dice looking for, or expecting to be moved on, during this transfer window. Whether all this concern is down to Lee is questionable, however he will be the one to get the ultimate sanction for our inability to reach some prescribed goal somewhere in the future. When I look at the last 10-15 years under many managers we consistently ask the same questions of our management and to date I can't remember seeing any of them answered in a complete and professional manner which usually leads to the same mediocrity out on the pitch.

To be perfectly blunt I can't see Steve Lansdown ever changing his stripes, or dictates, which will consistently leave us as mid-table at best and if that's the direction we take then good on us but don't expect the supporters to sit silently by without a single word.

Unfortunately the man for the job has just found a new home by the seaside having shrimps for tea. Whatever your thoughts are on the annual merry-go-round I wish you all the best of luck for 2020 from sunny and warm Vancouver Island.

Yeh. Was a rather daft comment, they were playing within themselves , he overthinks things at time’s , I thought tactically we were niave throughout today , as for taking elliason off that was a strange one too, the one guy who actually creates chances when we were 2-0 down, and Lee’s reasoning was bizarre to say the least, bad day at the office again for LJ, can’t see uncle Steve doing anything about it though,

also playing Cory at centre half until we were 2-0 down was bizzare , when question he Lee said he was managing fitness levels, and anyway him playing there wasn’t detrimental to the team, so that begs the question why we don’t play him there normally, or indeed why we didn’t leave him there and bring Nagy into midfield instead of bringing Moore on when we went 2-0 down. Very strange interview, if he felt we were even close to being at the level of Brentford today he’s delusional.
