Great stuff, that pass of Gerry Gow to set up Keith Fear was **** hot. There are so many great times, memories, players and matches that you could include, nice one wiz
Thanks for the memories to every City player. Memories that live for ever inside of each of us. Promotion 1955, Stanley Matthews in 1958 so well held by the "Threshing Machine", relegation 1960, Big John's last two goals v. Ipswich, perpetual struggle for survival in the early Dicks years and then 1-0 at West Brom and 1-1 at Sunderland as we finally made it to the promised land. Only for it to collapse in a heap of financial mismanagement 1979-82. 8th in First Div Oct 1979 to 92nd in the leagues Dec 1982. The financial rescue, Terry Cooper's boys getting out of the Fourth Division and two visits to Wembley. JJ's promotion and miserable relegation in '95. Ward leading us up again in 1998 and then throwing his dolly out of the pram as another relegation came swiftly. Wasted years with Wilson, Tinman and GJ dragging us up and so nearly making the promised land again 30 years after AD. Now another new, stuttering beginning with Derek McInnes; Where will it all go from here? Up or down? I've been a City fan for 63 years and feel more passionate as every year passes. I just hope all you young City fans last as long as I have and still burn with a love of the City! And that we get back where we were 110 years ago. In the top division of English football where a team from the 6th largest English city should be!!!!!!!!!!
what an underated player keith fear was, will allways remember him tearing don revies leeds to shreds, in front a full house, at the gate in 1972, remember going in a three piece suit, cos the only way i got the day off, was by telling the boss my brother was getting married, great great days.
Seeing the name of the previous poster reminds me of another moment in history. Glos Cup final at the Gate against the unmentionables in 1968. Chris Crowe at outside-right against Alex "I take no prisoners" Munro the Gas left back. City attacking the covered end and several times Crowe and ball are bundled over the touchline by the refined defensive play of Munro. Then Crowe got the ball on halfway line and set off toward the corner flag. Munro had moved well away from the touchline and went full pelt at an angle of 90 degrees to the touchline along which Crowe was now motoring at speed. As he approached the touchline obviously intent on clattering the City man into the Williams enclosure, Crowe just put the brake on and stopped dead. Munro now on his ass with legs flailing in front of him crashed into the ringside seats that were alongside the enclosure railings but pitch side of them. We heard the bone crunching into the concrete seats. Normally I would feel sorrow for any pro that breaks a leg, but on this occasion it was well deserved and although I was too far away from the incident, I wonder if Chris Crowe did smile a little that he had gotten some of his own back for the previous fouls.
Old.........not a "BIG" game really, just one that sticks in my mind. 2 nil down from the first leg of the Freight Rover Trophy against Hereford. Still 2-0 at half time then the half of all halves to beat them and win our first trip to Wembley, where Glyn Riley (80's perm and all!) stole the headlines. New.....the noise and atmosphere at AG towards the end of the Palace game to take us to the play off finals. "Always believe" was ringing in my ears for days after that!
What memories they were, still think Alan Dicks side that got promotion to the old first division, was the greatest side i ever saw, and i go back to the days of Atyeo, Jantzen Derrick, Ernie Peacock, Mike Thresher, a couple of hard buggers there, unfortunately it ended up being the worst days in our history, but we came through it, and now i think we may have the next Alan Dicks in our midst in DM, given the right backing by the club, i think this man could lead us to the promised land. Well we all dream don't we.
John Atyeo scores for England.
The Cow Shed stands tall, the open end is free and open,no Dolman stand,no Atyeo stand, the East End is alive and Big John scores, magic days....
Thanks Wiz. The Colchester game brought back memories of the old ground and 1 game in particular 2 years later against Southampton. Don't know why, but I remember being shocked to see Jimmy Melia pass the ball back from the half way line. It was the first time I'd ever seen a back pass from so far out, it was 'foreign' for players to back pass then. How the game has changed and most of it for the good but Melia would have been in his element today.
I was there; from the players in the team, I've worked out it is Oct 10th 1964 and game finished 1-1 in front of 9,983. Big John scored for City. Team; Gibson; Ford, Briggs; Parr, Connor, Low; Savino, Clark, Atyeo, Williams, Peters. We finished second and got promoted!!!!!!!!!!! The last 15 games brought just one defeat, two draws and 12 wins. Some more of the same this season lads.
my one great regret is never having john atyeo play, my first game was a 1-0, win over preston but for the life of me cant remember the year, most of the previous posts team were still playing, so must have been shortly after, anybody help nudge my memory,?
Hello Wings of a Crow; The good news for you is that if I'm correct below, you did see John Atyeo play for City in your first game. According to one of my many David Woods books, we played Preston North End at Ashton Gate on Sat 16th October in 1965 in front of 15,583 and beat them 1-0 with a goal from Terry Bush. Team; Gibson; Ford, Briggs; Drury, Connor, Low; Derrick, Atyeo, Bush, Clark, Peters. That season was the closest to getting to First Division until we actually did 10 years later. Good Friday, we lost 1-0 at home to Southampton thanks to an og by Jack Connor, who Gibbo always joked was the most dangerous forward he had ever faced as City's goalie. after beating Argyle away the next day, we drew at Saints in the return fixture, thanks to an equaliser in 95th minute from Terry Paine. Thus with those three points from us Saints went up and we finished 5th even though we won three and drew one of our last four matches - including a 3-1 win at Birmingham. A lack of goals and too many home draws (10) also contributed to the failure to go straight from Div 3 to Div 1 in successive seasons. City used only 17 players that season with 3 ever present, two on 40 games, three played over 30 games and guess who finished up top scorer in his last season? Of course Big John with 19 goals. And the largest attendance of any match that season was 36,183 on 28th Dec for Wolves at the Gate. Lowest at home was 10,479 for Leyton Orient at end April. Still enjoy it?
Remember the Wolves game very well, reason for the massive gate, first game under floodlights, a cold snowy night, lost 1-0, getting out of the ground my feet didn't touch the floor, ahh those were the days.
