Every word Steve Lansdown said on selling Bristol City, the three-year plan, FFP and Massengo Robins owner Steve Lansdown spoke to Geoff Twentyman on BBC Radio Bristol ahead of Bristol City's defeat to Sunderland https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/every-word-steve-lansdown-said-7433364 (Too much to copy and paste)
Bristol City FC is part of Bristol Sport, is the whole group up for sale or is it just the football club?
He has taken the club as far as he wants-football club wise he has lost a small fortune. Amazed that nothing has materialised maybe he is asking to much-is the stadium and football club together or is just Bristol City FC
An interesting read. I think the 'package-deal' nature of buying Bristol sport and the stadium, rather than just BCFC may put off some investors.
Lansdown lost his appetite (or bottle) to actually get the club to the very top years ago, so if the right buyer can be found then I’m all for it. The stadium and facilities are excellent and for that I give him credit, but a lot of it has just been hot air these last few years about getting the biggest team, in the 7th largest city in the UK into the top flight, and some of the decisions over the last 20 years when we should have made headway have been amateurish, and that’s being kind. Other chairmen in his position and with money on the hip made it work for their clubs, from Dave Whelan at Wigan, Mohamed Al Fayed at Fulham, and of course most notably, Jack Walker at Blackburn, who won them the Premier League with his money, and the appointment of Kenny Dalglish ! It’s a genuine shame, as it could and should have been so much more for the club and for the city to be proud of.
I think the time has come for the club to look at getting a new owner for only the football club and not all the other stuff unless it's part of the package. SL has done his bit over the years to keep us afloat and he's not getting any younger so he deserves a total break from the losses incurred by owning a football club. The only problem for me is the possibility that it may take foreign money from who knows where to get us back on sensible ground before we have a chance of redemption. Someone once said if you want to get a small fortune then start off with a big fortune and buy a football club. (old joke I know). Totally off course here: How can you get your own Lockheed F104 Starfighter? Answer: Buy a field and wait. (John may like that one)
I noted that SL seems really teed of with Massengo for not accepting new contract and holding us to ransom and considering there has been no approach for him I think we should let him drown in his own ego and then let him go. He has never done a single thing for me to warrant why we ever bought him in the first place yet alone spending 5 million quid. Perhaps we might be able to dump him in what is left of the transfer window and count our losses and move on.
£7.2m Massengo joined Bristol City on 5 August 2019 for a reported fee of £7.2m signing a four-year contract with the club.
I think it was closer to £2m up front, with potential add-ons to get to a maximum figure of £7.2m, some of those being promotion, international appearances etc. So safe on those 2 clauses....
Bristol City sign Massengo from Monaco - second most expensive signing in history https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bri...expensive-signing-in-history/view/news/342531
Fair enough, I always that was the maximum price we would pay if every clause was enacted. I didn't think we paid that as an upfront fee, but maybe I misunderstood.
In all honesty I only put up what was in print, we have all heard or read variations of his and other signings, that is the constant trouble with our club, they only tell the fans half of the story, what they think we need to know to keep us happy. Like we had a sold out stadium v Sunderland but the crowd total was under 25k.
The club used to deliberately lower the real attendance figure when announcing the 'gate' at 16.45 in the 70's and 80's and possibly before that. I am assuming it was a tax avoidance thing ?
