This is why Bristol City don't need to spend a single penny in the January transfer market
Yes, Robins need reinforcement but they already have several good options from the bench.

Hear me out, Bristol City fans, but the Robins don't need to spend any cash in January to be successful.

And no, I'm not still merry from the festive period.

First off, there's no point bringing in players if they're not better than what the side already have. Yes, you may deepen the squad but City hare at a point where they need quality over quantity.

And further the head coach knows this. Do not assume that there will be signings in the next four weeks.

The club may not find better than what they have and the deals may not be forthcoming due to cost. That's the football world when you're working by financial fair-play and limiting your spending.

The head coach has hinted at this himself after the recent home draw against Norwich City.

"I think that trading [in January] is a possibility. It’s not a case of being able to go willy nilly with things.

"If we don’t make a signing, then it’ll be a because everybody that is accessible, available and affordable is not better than what we’ve got and that’s where you’ve got to be careful," he said.

But beyond that, City honestly don't need to spend and here's why.

The Robins have the joint second best defence in the league at the time of writing. As our Bristol City writer has been banging on about, they need more goals in their team. And especially when playing in BS3.

BUT there are yet more goals to come from this squad.

Firstly, all the younger players will hit the net more as they gain more experience and confidence.

We've seen it from Callum O'Dowda this season as he's started to find the net in recent weeks (two in his last five matches) and we've seen it for Niclas Eliasson if you switch out the goals for assists (four official ones so far this season).

Further, Josh Brownhill has hit the back of the net more and more and is on course to hit more than in the last campaign (three so far, five last season).

But if City want a more regular goal threat in their side then they need look no further than their own bench as Marley Watkins has proven previously that he can be prolific in the Championship. He hit 10 goals in 2016-17 for Barnsley, with nine assists.

Indeed the former Norwich man boasts the second best goals per minutes record in the squad currently [one every 245 minutes to the 208 of Famara Diedhiou].

The Robins need only swap out the lacklustre Andi Weimann who looks unable to add to his five goals this season for Watkins who would be a better bet to add more goals to this City side.

This writer would expect Matty Taylor, Jamie Paterson and Callum O'Dowda to all contribute further in the final 20 league games of the season too.

Regarding incomings, I would suggest that with few top quality targets likely to be available that the Robins only bring in a player on loan instead of splashing the cash.

That then mitigates any costs and risk involved.

If Lee Johnson can pluck a talent from the Premier League to come in on for the rest of the season and add some real pace to the Robins' front line then this campaign could yet take off.

And yes, there might be a loan fee involved but we're neglecting to mention that. Something that should be much less than a transfer fee.

Don't believe me? Look how Tottenham Hotspur are doing without splashing the cash last summer.

Hard to argue with that, but I'm sure someone will have a go!

Does anyone on here have a clue where we are sitting in the player salary department and our subsequent ability to pay possible higher paid new recruits?

It's impossible to know for sure but going by the financial results, I'd imagine we pay competitively but nowhere near the 'top' clubs in the division, who are most likely in a different league to us wage budget-wise.

As you say Rob some other teams have larger attendances to generate the income needed to fund new players and some do so at their peril.

a post a while back stated a certain club wage bill was £40m less than the next one up!
so one must assume ours would be 50 or more £m lower than that ………... based on £20m a year likely we are paying about 10 - £12k a week? maybe £15m max?
