Now that the embargo has been lifted, I can give you the entries for Breeders' Cup in just over a week's time. It's taken me a little longer than I expected to pull them together (having been sent them in a funny format) so for the moment I only have Friday's entries, but will put up Saturday's as soon as I've finished reformatting them and taking out the irrelevent information. Note â horses that are listed as ânot selectedâ may still run, they have just not made the first choice list. If any of the horses in the first choice list pull out (many have dual entries) then horses from the reserve list will be bumped up. Post times (local time) are as follows: Friday 4th November Juvenile Sprint 4.10pm Juvenile Fillies Turf 4.50pm Filly & Mare Sprint 5.30pm Juvenile Fillies 6.10pm Filly & Mare Turf 6.50pm Ladies Classic 7.30pm Saturday 5th November Marathon 1.20pm Juvenile Turf 2.02pm Sprint 2.37pm Turf Sprint 3.21pm Dirt Mile 4.01pm Turf 4.45pm Juvenile 5.25pm Mile 6.07pm Classic 7pm (Yes those odd times are right!) I'm not sure when the clocks change in Kentucky but I think they will be 4 hours behind us - Classic is certainly usually about 11pm our time.
Not of interest to anyone then?! Naturally Breeders' Cup are hyping these entries for all they're worth, but I think they are actually VERY disappointing. Of the 30 or so overseas entries, 11 have come from Ballydoyle alone. Without Coolmore this meeting would fall flat on it's face. Godolphin have not sent a single European based horse and as Julian Muscat pointed out in his column in yesterday's RP (article on the other BC thread), barring GOLDIKOVA, MIDDAY and SO YOU THINK, the Euro entries are hardly inspiring. Perhaps the beginning of the end for BC?
I think after they went away from the pro-ride back to dirt it was the end of the Breeders Cup for many of the European trainers. I personally agree with you that without Coolmore the meeting would be much poorer, and if they have another George Washington (really hope not) moment on the dirt then they may also think again.
Re Godolphin not sending any European based horses I think the question must be raised of who could they send? The list of stars that they house these days is not exactly exhaustive. Personally I’m delighted to see Daddy Long Legs and Midday have been entered and actually think Europe could have a good meet. Mr Gosden, Sir Michael, Richard Hannon, Roger Varian, Brian Meehan and Monsieur Fabre, as well as Sir Henry and Coolmore, have all made interesting entries. I see that on the Friday 5 out of the 6 races are fillies and mares only. Seems a bit strange in the way they have ‘segregated’ the 2 days.
Nass, if you haven't read the copy of Julian Muscat's article that I posted on the other BC thread, you should. It raises the same point about racing surfaces, as well as medication.
How strong are the Americans this year Princess? And how strong has the European scene been over the last few seasons? The fact that the German filly tore the Arc field apart, seems to point to an over inflated local status. And as you said Goldakova, Midday and So You Think are hardly champions, yet they are highly competative in top European racing. If this holds water, then is it fair to then say that the Breeder's program is dying?
x-posted with you there SirBC. They made the Friday "Ladies Day" a few years ago, which, in my opinion, was another error. I honestly think the only way they can hope to survive as an international competition would be to go back to the original 7 races, plus perhaps the Marathon (which should be extended to 2m). The additional races have watered the competition down. Let's be honest, if you take Goldikova, Midday and So You Think out of the European line-up, they are a pretty mediocre bunch. Not a single one of the top 3yos has been entered, and the majority of older horses have stayed away as well.
Cyc, the Americans are a very weak bunch this year. Uncle Mo was supposed to be the second-coming but has failed to set the US racing scene alight, thuogh granted he did have a severe liver infection at the start of the season. Nicholas Godfrey said a few weeks ago in the Racing Post that this year is perhaps one of our (Europe) best chances to win the Classic. It says a lot that DANGEROUS MIDGE, at best only a G3 winner in the UK, won the G1 BC Turf last year. VALE OF YORK, winner of the 2009 G1 BC Juvenile could only manage a place in a UK G2 and a place in an Italian G1 (notoriously weak affairs) DONATIVUM won the BC Juvenile Turf in 2008, but following that run could do no better than 3rd in a G2 at Newmarket and a win in a French Listed race.
For what it's worth here are my picks for the 'main' BC races: Classic - Havre de Grace - don't like the US colts and worried about the going for SYT. Mile - Courageous Cat - seems to be better than when beaten by Goldikova at her peak - value at 12/1 with UK bookies. Turf - Sarafina - just had a look at her win in Grand Prix de St Cloud - I feel the Turf could be a similiar run race. Distaff - Plum Pretty - may have even beaten Havre de Grace. F and M Turf - Stacelita or Announce - Stacelita had a very good level of form in Europe / I feel Fabre has had this race in mind all season. I think I will stick to these five races as I have not paid too much attention to US racing this year. Looking forward to late evening viewing of Breeders Cup in PMU Bistro near hotel close to Gare du Nord in Paris. However the 'jumps' at Auteuil on Saturday and Sunday will be of more interest!! Now back to Buffalo Springfield.
Grizzly, is there not an overlap with our clocks changing this weekend? I thought the clocks over the Pond don't change for another 2/3 weeks? I could be wrong though.
PN - actually you could be right, US clocks always go back first Sat night in Nov so for a 7 day period there is an overap where there's 4 hours difference. Apologies
Not a single top 3yo from Europe has been entered? Maybe thats because we only have one, Frankel. Sea Moon is potentially as good as any of the rest of them. The way some of you talk you would think that the BC only survives because of us Europeans
Sea Moon and Strong Suit are NOT currently top 3yos - they haven't won a G1 between them to date. No one is saying BC wouldn't survive without Europeans, but they have failed in attracting more international participation despite all their fanfare earlier this year and they ARE in financial trouble. Many people "in the know" don't anticipate BC surviving another 5 years.
I'm no expert but the Breeders Cup was billed at racings World Cup a few years ago and the Americans worked hard at attracting Europeans so the even was a truly global one, then the rise of Dubai, Hong Kong and Japanese racing meant that huge purses were available so perhaps the Breeders Cup is no longer the attraction it once was (to overseas horses).
So who exactly are these top 3yo's who are so much better than Strong Suit and Sea Moon? Ill give you 100/1 the BC to stop in the next 5 years. I would even give you the next 50 years but who wants a 50 year bet?
