David Cameron has today announced he is to rebrand Great Britain as Great Manchuria. "Britain is a lousy name" he says, "only associated with repression, bowler hats, and silly walks. By shortening our name to Great Manchuria we are more able to tap into markets in the fastest growing world economy and I will be able to give this proud nation the prosperity it deserves".
It was pointed out to Mr. Cameron that Great Britain is already in the top tier of world economies and that history shows us that gradual, balanced growth, using a well known and well respected name is the answer to long term economic benefits. Furthermore, economists have stated that there is no evidence that rebranding a country would work and could have the opposite effect when world businesses regard the country as a joke.
However, Mr. Cameron is not for turning. "I was elected Prime Minister and I said when I took office that I would run the country as a business. No-one tells me how to run a country". He further stated "It's not as though I'm changing our colours, the flag will still be red white and blue. Residents can call this country what they like."
He also stated that the country was already called Great Britain Manchuria as the Bank Of England had been using cheques with that name on since the Year of the Rat, so he was in fact only shortening the name. "If residents don't like my idea" he said, "they know where the airports are. I will arrange for a refund of some of the income tax already paid in this financial year".
Earlier in the day he was asked if any market research would be done before a rebrand took effect and he promised that it would, although there are unconfirmed eye witness reports that he had his fingers crossed when he said this.
Mr. Cameron was later seen to be visibly shaken when a group of British citizens walked past parliament with a Union Flag adorned with the words "We are British".
