Bristol Rovers' move to a new stadium took a massive step forward today as the government said it would not block the redevelopment of the club's current home. Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has decided not to delay the application by Sainsbury's to build a new supermarket on the site of the Memorial Stadium for further scrutiny. A message from Rovers chairman Nick Higgs published on the club's website this evening said: "I am pleased to confirm that Bristol City Council have been informed by the Secretary of State that he has approved the decision to grant planning permission to J Sainsbury’s for a mixed use development on our existing site. "This is great news as we move one step closer to making a reality of our dream for a new stadium at the UWE Campus."
