http://au.news.yahoo.com/odd/a/-/odd/17898986/brazilian-mob-decapitates-soccer-referee-after-he- ... I remember when the Columbian goalie was shot dead at the airport when they returned. South Americans are a different lot
What about Andres Escobar? Scored an own goal against America at USA '94, killed by Colombian gangsters when he returned home due to them losing money because he scored that OG...
I only recall Escobar being shot somewhere in Columbia - supposedly due to the og he scored at the World Cup in 1994. At that time, Columbia were supposedly a decent bet for the tournament as they qualified with ease.
I read about it yesterday on a foreign site with google translate. The ref (20yo) pulled a knife and stabbed the player (31yo). He died on the way to the hospital. There were family, friends and supporters in the crowd who grabbed, stoned him, quartered him and then severed his head and stuck it on a pole. The police got one of the main people who grassed on a few of the others, so they've got a number of them plus a lot of phone video records of it.
A referree in Brazil is decapitated by the crowd after he stabbed a player who refused to leave the field... "Football spectators in northern Brazil decapitated a referee after he fatally stabbed a player for refusing to leave the pitch, officials say. An angry mob stormed the field during the amateur game in the state of Maranhao and stoned Otavio da Silva to death before severing his head. Police said the murder was in retaliation for Mr Silva stabbing player Josenir dos Santos. One man has been arrested over the killing and investigations continue. The incident took place on 30 June in the remote town of Pio XII, but news of the event has been slow to emerge. The state's Public Safety Department said it started when the referee and Mr Santos got into fist fight after the player was sent off but refused to leave the pitch. Mr Silva then pulled out a knife and wounded Mr Santos, who died on his way to the hospital. The player's friends and relatives rushed onto the field, stoned the referee to death and dismembered his body, the department said in a statement. So far police have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the crime. "We will identify and hold accountable all those involved," police chief Valter Costa was quoted as saying by local media. "One crime will never justify another." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-23215676
I was watching Baseball last night at about 3am!! (Don't ask!) It was the Boston Red Sox at the LA Angels. The Angels pitcher Jered Weaver (who has just signed a contract extension for $70m!!) drew some letters in the mound before he started to pitch. The commentator mentioned it was in memory of his mate and fellow pitcher Nick Adenhart who was killed in a car crash 3 years ago. In that crash a guy called Jon Wilhite suffered what was termed an Internal Decapitation where his uppermost spinal vertebrae were actually separated from his skull. Amazingly surgeons were able to re-attach the spine to his skull without there being any damage, other than bruising, to his nervous system and the guy is now walking around normally. Not that's one lucky guy.
