I watched it recently and was stunned by how close a game it actually was. History has told me that this Brazil team was other wordly and simply swept everyone else away when in reality until the last 20 mins Italy are aguably the better team. Indeed, it could be said but for the 'match of the century' against West Germany in the semis draining them so much they might conceivably have won.

It was probably Brazil's worst game of the tournament and you know what they say about playing badly and still winning and in the World Cup as well.
I remember sat watching their games like everyone else and thinking who the hell is going to beat them, they was well ahead of their time. They was a joy to watch and i'm glad I came across that game, now to look for the rest of them.

Gerd Muller said that West Germany should have been world champions that year because they beat England, "the best team in the competition". It's a myth that Brazil '70 were far above everyone else, in fact if you watch our match against Brazil (that we lost 1-0) you'll see that we were the more complete side, missing some glorious chances - Jeff Astle's being the most obvious.

But then Italy beat them in a truly astonishing match.

Watched this match and the England Brazil match a few times. what strikes me is how good England were playing passing football and how much we lost our way afterwards.
I read once the Brazil coach was asked if he had the complete team and he said no if he had two of the English team he would have?? Any guesses as to who he thought would get in his Brazil team??

Moore and Banks? I'm guessing Charlton was past his best then, as I believe that was his last game.

Against Brazil? When Banks made 'the save of the century' from Pele? Are you quite sure? I could swear I've seen that played about 1000 times..... Bonetti was in goal against Germany when Banks had food poisoning.
