Fifa has confirmed that goal-line technology will be in place for the 2014 World Cup.

Sepp Blatter, president of world football's governing body, had previously said he was committed to bringing in goal-line technology for the tournament in Brazil.

It was tried out at the Club World Cup in December, and Fifa will now roll it out for this summer's Confederations Cup and next year's World Cup.

"The aim is to use GLT in order to support the match officials and to install a system in all stadia, pending the successful installation, and pre-match referee tests," Fifa said in a statement. With different technologies on the market, Fifa has launched a tender today, setting out the technical requirements for the two forthcoming competitions in Brazil."

Hawk-Eye and GoalRef both have Fifa approval and are likely to compete against each other, and possibly other manufacturers, for the World Cup rights.

    Finally!

Sadly, not having it before now has cost too many teams so many times.

I've never really commented on goal line technology before <whistle> but really? Like who and when?

It can't spot cock ups that mean the ball should never have been there in the first place for a start, but it happens so infrequently and even then the refs are right more than the technology will be, it's just an expensive pacifier.

I think think there's now two possible scenarios for this World Cup.

    1. There won't be a single contentious goal and everyone will forget it's there.
    2. A goal confirmed using the new technology will see us knocked out.

Lampard vs Germany, WC 2010 - You probably know this one.
Pedro Mendes vs Man Utd, Premiership 2005 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-8dOjeVC80
Juan Mata vs Spurs, FA Cup Semi Final 2012 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuKgHICgCRs
    Bolton vs QPR, Premiership 2012 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ML-UmQw23_I
England vs Ukraine, Euro 2012 - Again, you've provbably seen it.

    Just to give a few.

To be fair, you have got a point there.

Without even opening any of those, in all of global football over an extended period, you actually find relatively few.

So, now do the same again and find how many were scored that shouldn't have counted because of other infringements either during or leading up to the goal. I bet the second list is far, far longer than the first and I bet the goal line technology gets a few wrong as it does in tennis and cricket.

Think it through OLM, we never get knocked out legitimately. No, instead we'll 'score' in the one instance the technology doesn't work, it goes unnoticed by the officials and go on to lose.

DMD, you haven't said it's a red herring yet! :emoticon-0116-evilg

That linesman was clearly right! <whistle>

I tried to pick ones that have happened with the debate on technology being around.

Essentially these arguments are used at international level as an excuse for England being ****e and now we'll just have to look for something else to blame.

If we stop getting cheated out of matches there'll be no need to complain <ok>

this is the thin end of the wedge.
technology will be introduced for goals, then penalties, then throw ins.
goal line technology wont work during winter games.
I think that refs being human and making mistakes is what gives the game it's passion.
It will become too sterile and boring.
Whats the point of watching a sterile game where the rules are observed 100%?
To me the money would be better spent getting better officials.
