Just announced on twitter that he is retiring from football. I've been going to city for about 10 years or so now and he has to be the best Right Back I've seen down the gate, I know a few older ones will have probably seen better but for me he's #1. Quite a few memories stick out, his hat trick when we played Doncaster, his passion for city and his bromance with Basso! A great player for our club and I wish him all the best for the future!

That Northampton game was the making of him. Great guy.

Would have thought he had a few more years in him yet, unless its injury

Only 32, surprised he didn't carry on for a few more years. Could have got a championship/league 1 contract but I'm guessing he's made his money with QPR and their promotion. Joining a then premier league Blackburn and moving to Toronto in the MLS.

Was that the game on the box where Carey b*llicked him and Orr 'responded' ?

Anyway, sorry Shiny for me wasn't brilliant - big heart and gave 100% but not brilliant.
Always reminded me that he was a midfielder who played RB, to me he wasn't a 'natural' defender.
I'm trying to think of decent RBs we've had, maybe Sweeney was best but they're not in the same parish as the LBs we've had.

Agreed, gave 100% but technical ability and football skill wasn't really there.

Would certainly be a contender for best RB in last 10-15 years though.

I never said he was brilliant... Just the best I've seen. To be fair he hasn't had much competition, Hunt, Spence, Foster, Wilson...

Strong in the tackle but distribution wasn't the best.

I never saw so much blood as I did when he smashed his face open in the playoff final right in front of me. Gruesome - like a tap flowing Crimson water - yuk!

Also didn't like the fiasco around his contract signing delay - like a miniature version of the Maynard debacle - although he did sign eventually.

Just to add: Caulker was better (imho of course)

I wouldn't say full backs have ever been that strong at City. Sweeney was a well balanced player but not particularly strong in the tackle and slightly slow to turn. Terry Cooper was past the sell-by and Orr not so powerful in his own box.
Little and Cunningham are comparable to any, and it will be interesting to see how they do at a higher level

    Right backs I agree.
However I strongly disagree about LB's - over the years LB has been our strongest position.

From Speedy, even Merrick (who had to make way for Hunter) was a good LB, Martin Scott (who I thought was the best),Darren Barnard, that Canadian I can never remember, to Micky Bell - I believe LB has been our strongest position.

'Just to add: Caulker was better' - Shiny's talking about RBs.

Jim was his first name if that helps you.

But like you Martin Scott was the best

How about Brian Drysdale as another excellent LB at (old) 2nd Div level? To my mind, never quite cut it in 1st Div. though.

Orr was passionate, but there has been many better in that position remember he started in midfield with us.

Carey was a better right back with scott murray in front of him.

Jim brennen head and shoulders above him.

Gerry Sweeney played in the old first division.

    Martin Scott fantastic player.

All these far better than Orr.

Mike Thresher was one of six footballing brothers who all played locally for Chard Town in Somerset; Mike also represented the RAF.[2] Pat Beasley signed Thresher in January 1954 from Chard Town for Bristol City.[2] Mike Thresher made his debut at left back in the Third Division South in a 2-0 win at Reading on 27 December 1954.[3] Thresher retained the left back for the rest of the season 1954-55 ahead of Jack Bailey and Norman Jackson. The season ended with Bristol City winning promotion as champions.[3] Thresher continued his full back partnership with Ivor Guy in the Second Division in 1955-56 making 35 appearances. In 1956-57 Mike Thresher was a regular again making 37 appearances at left back alongside both Jack Bailey and Ivor Guy. As the "Robins" slipped down the Second Division table finishing in 17th place Thresher made 41 appearances in 1957-58.[3] Thresher partnered new signing Gordon Hopkinson from Doncaster Rovers in the 1958-59 season as City rose to 10th place. Thresher made 41 appearances and starred in the two 4th round FA Cup ties v Blackpool when opposed by an ageing Stanley Matthews. City lost 0-1 in the replaty at Blackpool.[2] Thresher had another new right back partner in Roger Collinson in 1959-60. Thresher made 40 appearances in the relegation season as Bristol City finished bottom of the Second Division.[3] Back in the Third Division in 1960-61 Thresher made 41 appearances and played in all five FA Cup ties as Bristol City reached the 4th round before a 1-5 defeat at Leicester City. Thresher aestablished a new partnership for the next three seasons with Alec Briggs playing at right back. Thresher made 41 appearances as Bristol City finished 6th in 1961-62. THresher made a further 41 appearances in 1962-63.[3] The following season 1963-64 saw Thresher make 39 appearances and score his only League goal in a 1-1 draw at Southend United on 30 November 1963 as Bristol City finished 5th in the Third Division. City again reached the 4th round of the FA Cup this time losing 1-6 at Sunderland with Thresher playing in all five ties. When Bristol City finished runners up and won promotion to the Second Division in 1964-65 Thresher made only 7 appearances losing his place at left back to Alec Briggs as local boy Tony Ford was ever present at right back.[3] Mike Thresher moved to Bath City on a free transfer in July 1965. Subsequently he rejoined Chard Town.[2]
After football Mike Thresher worked in the family building firm until his wife's death in February 1995 when he was living in Langport.[2]

    Can't remember the first 3.
Remember Terry Bush and Gordie Parr, what a nutcase.
Only remember watching Boxley playing for Welton Rovers.
The best side in the Western League in the early 60s managed by Arnold Rogers.

That was the highlight of my career being picked against Welton Rovers in the cup. I think we lost 8-0
