I was lucky to be around in some great boxing eras, Ali Frazier Norton and later benn, Eubanks and Collins. All amazing fighters, did a little mouthing but then just got on with it. These modern fights are more like wwf fools. Pretend head butting at conferences and weigh ins. They're fooling no one, all fakes and a disgrace to the sport. Like premiership football, it all started falling apart when sky got their grubby hands on it. Amateur boxing still great but of course sky haven't got their grubby hands on it yet. Rant over
So good to watch re runs of fights from the 60's and 70's, heavyweights with power, speed and agility. Today's boxers aren't in the same class
What a great thread!! The days of proper champions like Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard etc. I have a big problem with British boxing, the promoters feed their fighters a steady diet of rubbish, build up a record and then when they finally face class they get battered - look ar Ricky Hatton as an example. Also the way fights are scored/refereed ... stinks. As you say, all about Sky!
I saw the headbutting... make that girlie handbags at 10 paces. Sorry to say, but it all sells tickets, which is why they do it. As some say above, blame sky NOT TOM LEES!!!
I saw an interview last night with a bloke called George Chuvalo. Got to say I'd never heard of him but 'kin ell he was game.
I actually only watched the Ali/Foreman 'rumble in the jungle' in its entirety for the first time last month. Wow! Haven't seen a fight like that since the Eubank days. And then there's Audley Harrison. My late gran could have taken him to the cleaners - even without her handbag!
