A wonderful drink which deserves its own thread. There's nothing to beat a nice mug of hot bovril and pepper when you come in out of the cold. It used to be especially sustaining when standing on the old terraces. Not everyone feels that way; a veggie friend used to call it "essence of cow", so you can, unfortunately, find yourself criticised merely for partaking of this marvellous beverage. Maybe this is why it raises peoples' hackles.
I love the smell of it, but I hate the taste. I'm weird, I know. I could always offer you a coffee made from hot mud...
You wouldn't be feeling so cold and in need of Bovril had you been wearing a nice thick cardigan when out. With a tartan rug over your knees if seated. Then change to a thinner cardigan in the house. A wonderful garment, and one of the few originated by Englishmen. Any true patriot and gentleman will have a selection in his wardrobe to suit formal or informal occasions. I understand the cardigan has now been taken up with enthusiasm by the winter sports crowd who favour vibrant modern colour-schemes not appropriate for shopping in Lewisham High Street, Could be the garment of choice in Sochi. But zippered cardigans and/or cardigans made wholly or partly out of synthetic fibres are vulgar.
One advantage of the all-seater stadiums is that you can take a flask of Bovril in and slip it under your blanket. Otherwise it seems no-one on not606 owns up to liking the stuff? Does this mean banishment to CL?
I love Bovril, its one of my reasons to drag myself to the damp Tuesday night games in the winter months! Though I never fail in burning my mouth with the first sip every time ... Worth it!
I love it. My work colleagues got me a jar of the stuff which was nowhere near as the naff powdered stuff served up at football stadiums.
I had a coffee at half-time. It tasted like the smell of compost. I shall email the catering manager on Monday.
