    PORTSMOUTH v AFC BOURNEMOUTH

    League One – 18 August 2012

    Link to BBC Preview:http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19221341

    Last meeting at Fratton

26 January 1991 – FA Cup Round Four
    Pompey 5-1 Bournemouth

    Who are Ya?

Originally Boscombe FC, the team changed its name to Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic Football Club in 1923 for its inaugural season in the Football League. This name remained until as recently as 1972, when the team name was shortened to AFC Bournemouth, although the elongated version remained the official trading name.
Possibly the two most memorable events in the club’s history have come in the FA Cup. In 1971 Ted MacDougall scored nine times in the 11-0 First Round victory over Margate. Then in 1984, while managed by Harry Redknapp, they knocked Manchester United out of the competition, beating them 2-0 at Dean Court in the Third Round.
They won promotion to the second Tier for the first time in their history in 1987 and spent three seasons in the old Second Division.
Highest League Finish: 12th in Second Division [Championship] 1989
Lowest League Finish: 21st in League Two 2009*
    Honours:
3rd Tier (League One) Winners 1987, Runners Up (Div 3 South) 1948
    4th Tier (League Two) Runners Up 2010, 1971, Play-Off Winners 2003
Associate Members Cup (now Johnsons Paint Trophy) Winners 1984

*The 2008-9 season saw four sides in League Two hit by points deductions; Luton -30, Bournemouth and Rotherham -17 and Darlinghton -10. If these were disregarded, The Cherries would have been 12th.

    Yesteryear

18 April 1924, Division Three South
    Portsmouth 3-0 Bournmouth

This was The Cherries’ first League visit to Fratton Park, in a season which saw Pompey win the league and reach the Second Division for the first time. Bournemouth held Pompey to a 0-0 draw in the return fixture three days later, which meant they were unbeaten at home by the top six sides. They ended the season one spot off the bottom, two points clear of QPR.

    Silver Stats - Bournemouth:

    5 seasons ago (2008): 21st in League One [relegated] - - FA Cup Rd.2, Lg Cup Rd.1,
    10 seasons ago (2003): 4th in Div 3 [League Two] – Playoff Winners - - FA Cup Rd.4, Lg Cup Rd.1
    15 seasons ago (1998): 9th in Div 2 [League One] - - FA Cup Rd.3, Lg Cup Rd.1
    20 seasons ago (1993): 17th in Div 2 [League One] - - FA Cup Rd.3, Lg Cup Rd.1
    25 seasons ago (1988): 17th in Second Division [Championship] - - FA Cup Rd.3, Lg Cup Rd.3

    Random Fact:
Bournemouth hold the record for the most consecutive seasons in the Third Tier; from 1923/24 (in Division Three South) until 1971.

    Cherries: 10/11
    Draw: 5/2

    Mystic Devo

If I’d cast my eyes over the crystal ball a couple of days ago I’d be saying how many I think Bournemouth will win by. However, I think the news from yesterday and the feel good factor it’s producing will give our thrown together side a bit more steam. I’m not going to get carried away – remember Bournemouth are amongst the promotion candidates – but I think a partisan Fratton Park crowd will lift the team and force the visitors to settle for a point.

    Devo reckons: Pompey 1-1 Cherries

    Good thread Devo <ok>

2-1 to the boys in blue, with goals from Izale McLeod & Lee Williamson. Cherries goal from that prolific scorer Richard Hughes on his return to FP.

So ... with all the new arrivals over the last day or so, what do you think the team that gets put out tomorrow will be?

Assuming no new more new arrivals, loans and that everyone gets international clearance and is match fit?

With so many new (and unfamiliar names) have absolutely no idea what the balance of this team will be. But we have 11 players, which is a start.

    Goalkeeper - Mikkel Andersen

Defence - Mustapha Dumbaya, Jon Harley, Adam Webster, Sam Magri

Midfield - Brian Howard, Lee Williamson, Jack Compton, Liam Walker

Striker - Izale MacLeod, Luke Rodgers

This leaves Simon Eastwood, Conor Clifford, Kieran Djilali, Ashley Harris, Dan Butler, Alex Grant and Dan Thompson as the subs (as I believe it's back to having 7 on the bench)

Any thoughts / insults welcome (but no comments from SFC with regards to us actually having some players please as I'm bored of this for now).

Enjoy the day, I know there is still a way to go in terms of long term survival, but that feeling of hope that you're getting your club back is something to celebrate.

So, I wasn't far off but we secured a couple more loans today (Kevin Long and Paul Connolly from Burnley and Leeds respectively). Centre half was definitely a position that needed looking at. I'm guessing that Liam Walker didn't get international clearance as he's not on the bench and Kieran Djilali plays.

Pompey: Andersen, Harley, Long, Connolly, Dumbuya, Djilali, Howard, Williamson, Compton, Rodgers, McLeod. Subs: Eastwood, Clifford, Harris, Webster.

Shame that none of the Academy players are starting (and no doubt will lead to more comments being thrown in our direction about how unfair it all is) - was hoping either. Also surprised that he hasn't filled the bench out with some of the guys who played on Tuesday.

Have a good one everyone who's at the game today. See you on Tuesday night at Colchester.

Good luck today and hopefully you will see a team playing with spirit. With most having played in the pre-season you should have an idea of how they look already.

Izale McCleod as well from 25 yards. Goalie made a right hash of it apparently.
