With the club in terminal decline and the inevitability of us losing our next six league games I am losing interest in the football until we get rid of Scott, Rodwell and Methven and/or the investors have a complete change of strategy.

So a new thread, following on from a couple of posts on the News and Current Affairs thread.

Does anyone have any favourite or recommended board games ?

I must admit I haven’t heard of Lardi’s ‘Campaign’ game. Is it similar to Risk ?

Always enjoyed Risk, but it often led to heated arguments in our household. Sometimes (if everyone was concentrating !) it could go on for a number of days. One game stretched over three consecutive YEARS, although not playing continuously I hasten to add.

My current favourite is Articulate. Anyone else ?

I have always liked a game of chess.

Perhaps I can sign on at The Valley as I always like to know what my next move will be.

Campaign is a bit like Risk to look at (a kind of map of Europe in many tiny squares, though the shape of the countries is not as in reality. On the board they are all roughly square and of equal size).
But the way Campaign is played is not much like Risk.
Each player has armies made up of two types of piece (Cavalry and Infantry I think) a little like chess pieces. Players can move their armies to occupy various cities or do battle with opposing armies. Up to 6 can play I think, and individual players can form temporary alliances with others.
Much as used to go on in Napoleonic Europe.
Campaign is a bit like a mixture of Chess and Risk. I used to enjoy it when I was younger but haven't played it in years.

Another game I used to love as a kid (though a card game not a board game) was TOP TRUMPS <ok>
Collecting all the different packs was fun.
One of my favourirtes was 'Super cars' ... all the latest street legal sports cars of the 1970's.
Those Italians could sure design beautiful sports cars back then.

Another one I had was 'Cruise liners'
All the luxury ocean liners of the 1970's. Only one I can remember now was the QE2...

Chess is brilliant. Absolutely no luck involved at all. Pure skill and strategy.

I used to think I was quite decent, but it’s a bit like football - there are people who are just a different level. I had an uncle who I tried to beat for years and never once managed it. Sadly passed away now but he remained undefeated by me.

Chess, Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, Scrabble, the old ones are the best. My favourite card game is Cheat.

Top trumps is timeless. I’ve still got a few packs. My favourite back in the day was Miltary Aircraft - the SR71 Blackbird had the top speed and the B52 the largest wing span I believe. Funny how I can remember things like that from 45 years ago but not what I did last Thursday.

Cars was another one. From the era of the Escort, Granada, Capri Ghia etc and I distinctly remember the blue Jenson Interceptor which looked like it was parked in a quarry somewhere.

I used to love playing chess - I still play occasionally with my daughter if I can prise her off her mobile phone. Monopoly was another big one, although the games could go on and on.

I have the Only Fools Monopoly set. Never played with it - it's just part of my collection.

Trouble is, Monopoly in my house starts off well, but then descends into chaos and never ends amicably.

Monopoly was obviously popular with almost everyone. Think I’ve got about four different versions now, but the original is the best.

But yes games can go on for a while and I think I’ve had two occasions where it literally never ended. Both remaining players had very equal properties and had been round the board so many times and collected their £200 pounds so many times that we worked out that they could each land on the others top property about 10 times and still pay it, so we called it a day.

I also find that whereas in the past you could have your children over when doing property swaps, nowadays they are a lot more canny and won’t swap unless it suits them <laugh>.

Never played Yahtzee. Is that the one where you remove sticks and try not to destroy the tower ? Or is that something else ?

Scrabble is another favourite. Like chess it needs a bit of intelligence.

The original Mousetrap was good fun, but later versions aren’t so good.

Trivial Pursuit was good until you learnt all the questions and it got a bit dated.

And Frustration was always a good laugh, as long as you didn’t have a headache :emoticon-0136-giggl

You are thinking of Jenga, bud. Yahtzee is the game of the Gods. Get yourself a set and you'll never reach for another game again. Ever.

I had some terrific board games as a kid in the 80s, such as Thunder Road, Atlantis, Dickens (better than it sounds).

Anyone remember Crossbows & Catapults? Awesome.

I must confess I haven’t heard of any of those.

Anyone know or remember a game called Ninnies and Numbskulls ? I think it later became known as Take the Brain and was vaguely like a dumbed down version of chess.

Also hard to beat Dominos (the game, not the Pizza chain) for longevity and simplicity. Not strictly a board game of course.

Not a board game but I always liked a game of three card brag.
