Born in Ashington and cousin of Toon legend Jackie Milburn but why didn't he play for Newcastle United?

He started his first team career in October 1956 just 5 months after Newcastle United had lifted their 3rd FA Cup in 5 years, Manchester United's only recent honours at that time were an FA Cup back in 1948 and the First Division title in 1952.

We were his local team, where his family were and played so why did he find himself in Manchester playing for United?

    Anyone know?

Wouldn't care, I actually skimmed through his wikipedia page and read the bit about the electrician apprenticeship and his national service in Shrewsbury (which was at the request of Matt Busby so he could play for Manchester United on a weekend) but missed the scouting bit....

...Still will echo the same question though, why didn't he come back and play for us?

Thought he was the nephew of Wor Jackie and that his mother ( Cissie I think ) was Jackies sister.

His Mother (Cissie) was a Milburn she had three brothers, Jackie, George and Jim. The Man utd scout was Joe Armstrong, he recommended him to Jimmy Murphy, Bobby was more intent on joining Newcastle as it was nearer home, but his Uncle Jackie told him the youth set up there was very poor, as it was at Leeds where Jackies brothers played, Jackie recommended he join United, even though it meant him leaving home, Bobby signed for United based on the advice given him by Jackie and his Grandad Tanner Milburn

totally different explanation on here to his other interview which I cut and pasted above

Bobby has said in interviews that Man United scouted him and he decided that was the best place to go due to their reputation at being a club that were good at developing young talent (Busby Babes)

And Colo, yes I watched United last night
