Thank god Bob Paisley's record of winning 3 European Cups and 1 UEFA Cup remains intact. IMO the best british football club manager that this country has ever produced. His achievements seem to have been forgotten by the majority of "football experts" but I would like to say that the guy will remain a legend and one day I hope his achievements get the recognition they deserve. Judging on last nights game Barca will dominate European football for many years to come. Ferguson may have eclipsed your number of championships but they will never equal your number of European trophies. I was lucky to be growing up in the 70s and I supported my club Ipswich Town under Bobby Robson who I am sure would have won the championship for us if Bob Paisley wasn't around. I have always been an admirer of Liverpool and I wish you all the best for next season under king kenny. He will deliver you a championship given time.
He's the ONLY and I put this in capitals to highlight it to win it 3 times. Some idiots claim that he ''inherited'' a team, what they fail to mention is that this quiet humble man who never wanted to be a manager and had to be pushed into taking the job, succeeded a managerial giant. For all Fergusons success,he succeeded a moron,an imbecile, someone that even Sam Allardyce a similar moron and imbecile would have done better than.Bob succeeded a great and made a great team an even better team.Liverpool were Barcelona under Bob. I asked this question before,How would Ferguson have done if he succeeded Busby who himself was a managerial giant?I reckon he would have been as successful as Tommy Docherty. Some managers carry on greatness, others build them from scratch like Ferguson did. Both have to be recognised. However,Bobs achievements should gain more recognition as he's a ''European Immortal''.And he did the lot in 9 just NINE remarkable seasons.
Even Clough gets better press than Bob Paisley! Clough won the thing twice and it can be argued that if it wasn't for Peter Taylor he wouldn't have won it at all! I've been to Anfield many times starting back in the late 70s but have only ever seen my team win there once back in the 2001 season. Our Sir Bobby is a remarkable manager and quite rightly gets the recognition for all his achievements but it should never be forgotten that Bob Paisley is just the best.
Thanks for the comments. Good luck to Ipswich next season. Hopefully we can see them in the Premier League soon.
What's also often forgotten is that Bob was there with Bill all the way so it was as much his team as Bill's when he took over.
Bob Paisley was the ''brains'' behind Shanks motivation and enthusiasm. The man was a genius.Okay some of the things he did looked simple. One example being against St Etienne in 1977 when he took John Toshack off and sent David Fairclough on and told him to ''run around''.That may have seemed a bit bizarre but in his own way,he knew they were tired and David Fairclough's pace would cause havoc. It worked to perfection. How many managers can guide a team to the title when they are 13th on New Years Eve of a season, like Liverpool were on New Years Eve 1981?20 wins 2 draws and 2 defeats in the last 24 games of that season saw Liverpool crowned champions. Now that was also a new team with a number of changes.Ronnie Whelan replaced Ray Kennedy,Ian Rush replaced David Johnson,Craig Johnston replaced Terry Mac.Brucie replaced Clem. The run started after the win over Spurs in the league cup final.Ronnie Whelan in his first appearance at Wembley scored twice in a 3-1 win.Bob built a machine that needed little talking to.A machine that hoovered up trophies. This is why I feel that he has to be recognised as a true great.
KPR you forget this was before sky and the diefication of fergie as the only manager whos' ever won anything. a humble man and a true genius. it should be SIR BOB PAISLEY!
My sentiments exactly. It was Thatchers anti Liverpool stance((not the club, the city) that was the reason.Less deserving people were knighted ie Bobby Charlton and Trevor Brooking.Ferguson got his due to financial contributions to Labour in the 90s. There is also people that claim that Ferguson is the only one to win a ''treble''.They are idiotic as the first treble was achieved by Bob Paisley's successor Joe ***an in 1984.Before anyone says that Ferguson won ''The Treble''.He didn't.''The Treble'' is the domestic treble which has never been achieved by anyone. Ferguson like Joe ***an achieved a domestic double and a European trophy constituting a treble.Bob Paisley is the only manager in England to win European trophys three seasons running.1976,1977 and 1978.He is also the first manager to win the uefa cup one year(1976) and the European Cup the following year(1977).The other two are Jose Mourinho(Porto) and Rafael Benitez(Valencia,Liverpool). In his 9 seasons he won multiple trophies on 5 occasions.1976,1977,1981,1982 and 1983.He is also one of a small few that played for and managed the same title winning team. The others are George Graham(Arsenal),Howard Kendall(Everton) and Kenny Dalglish(Liverpool). He was a remarkable man who had 9 remarkable seasons.I agree with what was put on his statue.''An ordinary man with extraordinary talents''. His humbleness can be summed up when in 1974,when he got the Liverpool managers job,he said ''I got the bloody job ah and I didn't want it''.
I was gutted in 1981 and 1982 when Ipswich were the best team but didn't win the league! If we had a bigger squad we would have won the title twice in a row. My hero Johnny Wark went onto Liverpool and won the championship with you scoring 24 goals from Midfield in his first season if memory serves! Paisley is a legend there is no doubt about that!
John Wark scored 24 goals from midfield in 1984/85 and we finished trophyless for the first time since 1975,Joe ***ans second and final season as boss, and his replacement one Kenneth Matheson Dalglish made amends by winning the double in 1986.
The fact that sir moansalot was given a knighthood degrades the honour to such an extent that to give bob paisley a knighthood would mean that they would insult the late great paisley as these two men should never have anything in common ynwa
I agree with that. Knighthoods have become worthless when they decided to give them out to unworthy recipients like Trevor Brooking,Bobby Charlton and Baconface. Those that said that Bob never built a team are imbeciles as only 3 players from the 1977 team played in the 1981 European Cup final.Phil Neal,Terry Mac and Ray Clemence.
