Skysports.com understands Birmingham are closing in on a deal for Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger.

Blues boss Chris Hughton is keen to lure Ranger to St Andrews as a possible replacement for Stoke-bound Cameron Jerome.
Hughton is a big admirer of Ranger having worked him during his time in charge of Newcastle and he believes he can get the best out of the player.

Newcastle are willing to offload Ranger as he does not figure in Alan Pardew's plans and he has not figured in their opening four matches this season.

Blackpool were also chasing Ranger and had agreed a fee with Newcastle for the 20-year-old, but they have now switched their attentions to Sheffield United's Daniel Bogdanovic.

Birmingham have now stepped up their interest in Ranger and are hoping to strike a deal before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm GMT.

If we can get somebody to replace him I would not care if he left

If he could actually score I'd be bothered, has offered very little to NUFC IMO.

He offers so little we wouldn't need to replace him, but we still need another stricker in regardless of whether he stayed or goes.

He can go, as far as I'm concerned. Sammy has replaced him as our impact striker, so he isn't needed, especially if we get in Roux/Cisse etc.

Clearly the lad is a total donut and epic pleb, but do not be surprised if in 3-4 years we look stupid for letting him go!

    Sammy > Nile.

He'll never be more than a Championship level striker. He showed flashes of good stuff at times when coming on, but when given a start looked awful. I remember him v Villa last season and he was diabolical. I was praying for Kuqi to come on.
