I think it is fair to say, the real hard men of football were around in the 60s,70s and 80s but mainly due to the fact they could get away with a lot more.

I wouldn't put Terry Paine down as hard, quite the opposite I'd have thought. Had to have his hair just right! How about "Docker" Walker and Jim Steele?

Paine could look after himself. I wouldn't have classed him as "Hard". However, I knew a former professional player who told me that the dirtiest, niggliest player he ever played against was Terry Paine.
