BRISTOL CITY BLOG: Early signs are encouraging from Steve Cotterill's men.

    Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill.

Hello Bristol City fans! My name is Will Collins and I’ve been a supporter of the club for 20 years. I have a season ticket in the Williams Stand this season and am looking forward to an exciting League One campaign that will hopefully end in promotion back to The Championship. This is the first of a series of blogs I will be writing every Wednesday on The Bristol Post website giving my opinion on all things Bristol City – I hope you enjoy reading them!

After a successful summer of recruitment on the playing side expectations before the start of the season started to run high – and justifiably so. Director of Football Keith Burt had admitted that there was a very clear strategy of identifying the best young talent in the division and aiming to sign them. As a result we’ve seen highly rated players such as Luke Freeman, Korey Smith, Luke Ayling and Mark Little join the club along with some much needed experience in the form of Aaron Wilbraham and Wade Elliott.

For my money Steve Cotterill must have one of the top three best squads in League One and with that comes something every manager doesn’t really want – pressure to deliver. That pressure comes from the supporters and also from the City board who are surely hoping to see promotion on the back of their significant investment.

Cotterill has presided over a very good start to the season thus far. Seven points from our opening three games represents a good return, especially considering Leyton Orient and Sheffield United started the season as fellow promotion favourites. The win over The Blades got us off to a flyer with Wilbraham having an outstanding debut and the other new boys all contributing well.

Cotterill has taken some stick from supporters in regard to his decision to make eight changes for the Oxford United League Cup game but that has been quickly forgotten about after our victory over Colchester United followed by a hard-fought point against Orient on Tuesday night.

Despite Cotterill’s pre-match talk of “going for it” against the O’s I felt it was actually a very conservative team selection from him, deploying two defensive midfielders in Smith and Pack. He also didn’t make any attack minded substitutions in the second half even when it was clear we were lacking in creativity. Nevertheless, his cautious approach resulted in a confidence building cleansheet of which we saw very few of last season. If we are to challenge near the top this season then cleansheets are essential.

We now go into two winnable away games at Rochdale and Notts County and I fancy us to keep the unbeaten run going.

    So do I
I wasn't there, but it sounded like very close game where the teams cancelled each other out.

That happens, but why did we not see JET with half an hour left, to score a trademark goal and win the match ?
One can only imagine the background circumstances behind this

Am going to Rochdale on Saturday, and I would hope there is a match winner among the City team

Mini gripe - otherwise Cotterill hints at a walk on water
