The glorious immortal (seemingly) leader of world football has announced that he doesn't like penalty shoot outs as they 'end in tragedy' ( interesting definition of tragedy) and are not in the spirit of a team game. He has asked Franz 'the Kaiser' Beckenbauer to look at alternatives and given him until 2014 to come back with his ideas. My memory may be faulty, but didn't we have 'golden goals' and variations on this a few years ago? Can't remember why this was kicked out. Apart from that, replays, tossing a coin, playing on after extra time until there is a winner don't really see that there is much else for Franz to write on the back of his postcard, but I'm sure he would welcome your suggestions.....
After 10 and 20 mins of extra time each manager chooses an opponent to leave the field with the exception of the keeper. Interesting tactical decisions to be made, creates more space and hopefully a winner. Open to variation if needed. Eg player every 5 mins etc
Golden goal with 11 on the pitch each team, reducing til 10 each team after 10 minutes with no goal, to 9 players each side after another 5 minutes with no goal, to 8 after another 5 minutes no goal, and so on until there is only 1 player on each side if no goal scored. Then there is going to be a goal !
Expandable goals, if score still tied after 20 minutes posts move apart at the rate of 5 inches per minute (12.6cm), if still tied after further 10 minutes crossbar is raised at same rate, first goal wins.
Spookily similar to mine so must be a good idea! Like it. Think we've just saved paying franz a stupid amount of money for 2 years work, then again that was probably the idea..... Jobs for the boys and all that!
That, Kerry, is a belter of an idea. Rewards the most adventurous team and, if you had a running total on the scoreboard during all games that need a sudden death finish, could open games up a bit too. Nice one.
By 2014 I hope there is a chance that at least one of Blatter and Fanz is retired, if not dead. Preferably the former, obviously.
10 v 10 for the 1st half of ET, 9 v 9 for the 2nd half and golden goal wins. I doubt we will see many games go to Pens. If they do, make goalies down a double vodka every 5 mins.
Few thoughts - Goalies have to wear binoculars during extra time - as per that YouTube vid. Goals on tracks and constantly move along the touch line from corner flag to corner flag at random, variable speeds. Handball law reversed during extra time - goalies feet only, outfield anything goes.
2 attackers vs 2 defenders and a keeper. 30 seconds to score from the halfway line, no offside. Sudden death.
After 90 mins, every 5 minutes add one more ball and two more players per team! or just stop the game at 90 mins and use FIFA rankings to decide the winner - they always make sense or after 90 mins go to the scorecard (like boxing) and have judges decide who was best (Maybe Sepp could be the judge or Simon cowell) Actually maybe we could do away with the first 90 mins and just have Sepp decide who would have won; it’s not great TV but Sepp's never wrong is he. or Keep penalties but have the players line up and take all 5 at once, England would still lose, but it would be much more instantaneous and lot less drawn out and painful, more like being shot in the head rather than slowly stabbed in the gut 5 times. or We keep penalties but only have one each, and introduce a new rule that only the goalkeepers can take them... or We keep penalties exactly as they are, the difference is we insist our players actually practise them until they start speaking German, I have a feeling once we keep winning penalty shoot outs we will ****ing love them. Tragedy - An event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe. I'm not sure one team winning, and one team losing a game of football quite fits Sepp's definition, maybe something was lost in translation.
Also he has asked a German to find alternatives to penalty shootouts.... Isn't that like asking a bear to find alternatives to ****ting in the woods....
Never Golden Goal. Its an awful idea that leads to two teams not daring to venture out of their own half. Plus professionals hate it which was why it was scrapped so quickly. I like the idea of reducing the players on each side though. That'd be quite fun.
