Blackburn defender Phil Jones could eventually complete a move to Manchester United after the two clubs agreed to a £20million transfer fee.

Rovers had upped the ante and demanded a bigger transfer fee, despite press reports that a £16 million deal was on the verge of completion.

Now United chief executive David Gill is putting together a package of installments that will end the feud and allow both sides to save face, according to the Daily Mirror.

Rovers blocked the £16m sale of Jones, currently representing England Under 21s at the European Championship, despite the centre-back agreeing personal terms and passing a medical at United.

The club’s Indian owners demanded an improved fee from United for their star youngster.

Rovers' more awkward stance is rumoured to have come about because they are unhappy that United – and Jones's other suitors – seemed to know of the existence of a minimum fee release clause in Jones’s contract. The situation reportedly gave the Blackburn owners a new-found resolve to force the player to honour his four-year contract.

Both clubs made contact with the Premier League who are ready to mediate if the deadlock cannot be broken. But their services may not be required if both parties agree on the £20 million deal.

United don't think they have broken any rules, but might be prepared to cave-in to Blackburn's demands to stop a rival club swooping for Jones.
