I was sat watching the news this evening and on came a bit about this supposed "black Friday" thing which I had never heard of before. I have to say I was stunned that this was in the UK. The behaviour of those people was just appauling. No, it was actually worse than that and I find it difficult to put into words what it was. Is this what this Country is or has come to? If any member of my family acted like that I think I would have to disown them completely. The whole concept of the day might be American, there is a shock, but they don't make UK citizens act like a pack of rabid dogs. If any of those people see themselves on the footage of those scenes then I hope they hang their heads in shame.
It was humanity at its worst Sensible, pure Greed with a capital G, like you I was disgusted with some of the scenes they showed on TV, America can take it back over the pond where it belongs !
Couldn't agree more. I might be wrong but i think the whole point of it (In the states) was to celebrate the day after Thanksgiving so no idea what it has got to do with us. Apart from the appalling behavior are people really that desperate that they will (literally) fight over luxury items e.g large TVs just to save a few quid? If they were starving and fighting over a limited amount of food to feed their children it might be more understandable, but large Tvs? really?. Be interesting to see what the shops do next year-they must be discounting to cost price or close to it so they must wonder if it is worth all the associated aggro.
The way I heard it was that the shops were discounting around 20% off normal prices before Christmas in the hope of selling more now so that they don't have to discount more, up to 50% post Christmas on as much stuff as normal sales. That is they have already sold half of their stock they would have given more off in the future. Is it just me or is there nothing good that ever comes out of America and this way. Starbucks, MacDonalds, Halloween and now this crap.
My sympathy goes towards the shop staff and security on duty during such a time. People holding on to big TV's like limpets..... one on one end another the other end trying to prise the other persons grip off of it......a third person trying to body surf over both of them to get to something else.....so amazing to see......I must admit I had tears running down my face in the end.......I just couldn't believe what I was seeing......Monty Python could have done such a sketch.....and we would have said it was too far fetched to believe.
What do i know? "Black Friday was the busiest day on record for online retailer Amazon UK, with sales that "surpassed all expectations", the company has said. Its website recorded orders for more than 5.5 million goods, with about 64 items sold per second".
On line I have no problem but scenes of packs of rabid people going crazy for a TV set I do have a problem with. I don't care how successful the day was it was still pathetic to see. I hope all those TVs break down and they have to revisit the scrum to return them.
Regarding the Black Friday thing....we live about 20min from the U.S Boarder...Black Friday sales are a huge draw for the Canadian shoppers to drive down to shop...so the stores here in Canada introduced their own Black Friday to keep the Business here..And by and large it worked.. Nowhere here have I seen scenes like you had in England.. Of course they only showed the bad shopping the majority probably went very well.. At least that's the way I see it..
It's the fact that this is England and generally the English don't do rabid shopping. I have no doubt lots of places were calm and dignified but it still does my head to think that ANY places in this Country went mad and bad even if it was only one.
I bet one of your bears wouldn't have much trouble selecting his purchase at such a free for all situation.
Watching those scenes I wouldn't have given much for the bear's chances Plym. Somebody would have been wearing it as a coat I reckon.
You lot have obviously been lulled into a gentle 30's and 40's golden days mentality down here in the southwest, fueled no doubt by over-consumption of black & white films with Celia Johnson or Noel Coward in them. You'd therefore be surprised how competitive ordinary things can be. You must drive, surely, you don't want to be beaten away when the lights turn green do you? One thing's for sure. You've clearly never commuted into a major city by train. Now that really is a cut-throat business.
