Well they bloody well should be! please log in to view this image Connor Wickham has scored three goals in 22 starts for Sunderland Sunderland's players have not considered the prospect of relegation from the Premier League this season, according to striker Connor Wickham. They have won one of the past 11 league games and are only four points above the drop zone with 10 games to play. Last season Sunderland avoided relegation after four straight wins late on pulled them clear of danger. "None of the lads are thinking about getting dragged into the same battle as last year," Wickham told BBC Newcastle. "Last year we got ourselves out of a rut and this season it's been focusing on not getting into that position ever again. "We've got the players in the dressing room, the mentality and the manager and staff to push us on. We should be better than being in that relegation battle." Last week's draw with Hull City was Sunderland's fifth game without a win. Sunderland league scorers in 2014-15 Player Games Goals (not including 1 own goal) Steven Fletcher 15 (+7 as sub) 4 Adam Johnson 21 (3) 4 Sebastian Larsson 28 3 Connor Wickham 22 (4) 3 Jack Rodwell 12 (4) 3 Jermain Defoe 7 2 Jordi Gomez 16 (7) 2 Lee Cattermole 19 (2) 1 One of the main problems for head coach Gus Poyet is the lack of goals from his side, with their 23 in 28 league games so far second only to Aston Villa's low of 15. The signing of Jermain Defoe in the January transfer window was an attempt to boost their tally, but the former West Ham and Tottenham forward has added just two goals to his 124 Premier League strikes before moving from Toronto FC last summer. "I wouldn't say it's not a good addition or wasn't going to plan," Wickham said. "It's the fact we're creating chances and we need to put them away. "Jermaine Defoe is a great player who has proved that in the past and he has scored loads of Premier League goals. "It's a valuable experience for me and the rest of the team to work off."
****ing Hell!!! Talk about seeing life through rose-tinted glasses! Sounds like they're sleep-walking towards relegation with that sort of attitude, bordering on criminal negligence!
I know footballers have a reputation for being a bit thick but jeeeez!! Why does the club let these guys have a microphone shoved in their face? It's just one PR screw-up after another!
He should be saying we know we are just above the drop zone and we know we have to fight to stay in the premier league the ****ing weapon Instead of nee sweat man, its a step up from last season
As long as Connor is picking up his ample wages and girls in Newcastle clubs on a Saturday night and taking them back to his im sure he'll not be too concerned.
"none of the lads are thinking about getting dragged into the same battle as last year" The one where we were bottom three almost the entire season? What exactly has he said that's wrong? He's talking us up rather than looking down which is what I'd prefer personally. We have been marginally better than up to this point last season and we are not bottom of the league adrift like we were last season. Am I too optimistic thinking that he's actually saying the right stuff?
I just read things differently - possibly my uber-optimistic approach! I read: "None of the lads are thinking about getting dragged into the same battle as last year," Wickham told BBC Newcastle. "Last year we got ourselves out of a rut and this season it's been focusing on not getting into that position ever again." The first line I would prefer them to be saying that rather than "we're terrified of getting dragged in" - Confidence breeds confidence - the second line seems to compare the two seasons and we're not as bad as we were last season. Most on here think we'll stay up as there are worse than us out there - so he's really echoing that IMO
I think you're on track to take the crown as most optimistic on the board fella. Even @Defoe in a row shed a little tear in the OP, and he's usually super optimistic.
I would expect the team to have a "face" to put on for things like this, must be inwardly bricking it but trying not to show it, pictures of so-called stars with latest super car don,t help,, I,d be more interested in seeing them putting extra in at the training ground, news like that etc.
What has happened to connor this season ?, he scored 5 goals late last season to keep us up, but he and the others are also not scoring. We need to go 3-4-3 tomorrow.
