The former QPR assistant and Kidderminster Harriers boss spent five years of his playing career at Watford, representing Birmingham's next opponents 157 times, but sentiment will have to be in short supply when the Hornets arrive.

Aiming to extend their unbeaten start to life back in the Championship, Watford visit St Andrew's on Tuesday, where they meet Birmingham City.

While the Hornets have won two of their first three matches, conceding only one goal, Blues are looking to bounce back from a weekend defeat to Cardiff.

After coming through their opening two games of the new season with four points, the prophets of doom were quietened a little at St Andrew's, but Birmingham could not keep the positive momentum going for their weekend trip to the Welsh capital.

John Eustace's side went behind early on against Cardiff City to a goal from Aston Villa loanee Jaden Philogene-Bidace, and they were somewhat fortunate not suffer a greater margin of defeat than the final 1-0 scoreline.

Given their well-documented issues off the pitch, many expect Blues to be locked in another scrap to avoid relegation this year, though they managed a 2-1 win over playoff finalists Huddersfield Town in their only home game so far.

Featuring in the Championship's Friday night game, Watford - who have yet to play on a Saturday or Sunday - won a battle of teams relegated from the Premier League by edging out Burnley.

Tom Cleverley's goal at the end of the first half proved enough to secure a 1-0 win, bringing a second home victory for new boss Rob Edwards from two attempts.

Though the Hornets spent much of the second half under pressure - particularly in the final 10 minutes, following Hassane Kamara's dismissal for a last-man foul - they took maximum points to move top of the Championship table before Saturday's fixtures.

What are the odds on Deeney scoring? - I can seem him celebrating too.

He’ll be forgiven - it’s his boyhood club and we know he respects Watford. He’s not exactly going to do a Richarlison on us, is he?

    I don’t think it will change Troy’s aim. <laugh>

Although he has been starting in their games, he is being subbed after 65-75 minutes. From what I observed in their last game his playing days look as though they will come to an end before much longer.

I hope he gets a chance to become an on-field hero for them.

Never particularly 'liked' TD... but a lot of respect for him... He played to his maximum ability and was a great inspiration on the pitch ...and what a penalty taker....

Tom Cleverley is rated as “touch and go” to be fit for Watford’s trip to Birmingham City tomorrow.
The Hornets club captain went off with a calf problem at half-time during Friday night’s victory over Burnley, moments after scoring what proved to be the winning goal.
“We’re still assessing him," head coach Rob Edwards said this lunchtime. “He has been playing through some pain and it got too much during the game on Friday.

No point risking further injury really but let’s hope Gosling plays better and learns how to take a corner if he is selected !

My boys, Mrs Andy and I met him at a club thing at the training ground a few years ago (in fact Matej and Seb were one of the two photos of Troy with fans on the Instagram post announcement of his departure). He was really beautiful with the boys, took an interest in them and shared a bit of fun with Seb, who is a quick-witted and quite funny little sod.
    Troy has my utmost respect.

Would be very happy to get something from tonight's game, we have certainly ridden our luck big time so far and I hope the bubble does not burst tonight. 2-1 to our boys with Mr. Deeney scoring for Brum, would be a result I would enjoy for a variety of reasons.
