I think its unlikely as I remember when he moved from Scunthorpe to Sheff Utd there was interest from a London based club (QPR I think), and he said that he didnt want to move there as he didn't want to move south as all his family were in the Yorkshire area. So the only way I think he will come is if Adkins has a very very good relationship with him
Rumour has it that he's already had/is having his medical. Doncaster have signed Tommy Spurr (LB) from Sheffield Wednesday so I don't think they'll want Mills, although they may play him at LM.
It wouldn't surprise me if we sign a player nobody has even mentioned. Most of our signings last season seemed to come out of the blue...
Always rated Sharp - thought he had the potential to go further than he has. I do think from what I have seen of him that he has a positive attitude/good work rate etc that sits well with the our style of play. NA likes though that put in the effort. He can also score goals att his level; I could see him feeding off Lambert and bagging quite a few goals. With some of the fees being banded around; if £3.2M - it does not sound so bad. Although, we don't know what the plans are for the coming season - this year might be one of consolidation... it would certainly 'put the wind up a few clubs' if we did put such an offer in!
There have been a lot of rumours linking him to our club. I just cant help feeling for that kind of price that we could get someone better and would be rather disappointed if we get him, as I do not think he adds much to our side, and I am rarely negative about a player. I just think we need a striker with pace and clinical finishing skills as I do not think Barnard will play a big part in our plans this season.
I think getting a natural goalscorer is the hardest position to look for, so they end up being very expensive. I personally can't think of a striker that would improve the squad that would be much cheaper than Sharp.
Agree with sfc94. When you consider Man Utd are spending a reported £18.9M on a 20 yar old keeper - what does £3.2M get you?
Just this minute popped across the the BBC Football site and saw this breaking news: Ipswich have accepted a bid of £9m from Sunderland for striker Connor Wickham, BBC Sport understands. Wickham, 18, could be a Sunderland player in 24 hours, subject to agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. The deal for the England Under-21 international, who made his Ipswich debut aged 16, could eventually be worth £12.5m with add-ons. Which sort of adds some credance to what has been written.
Well I think de Gea looks like a future international goalkeeper. I understand that strikers are pricey, look at Conor Wickham, however Swansea have paid less for Danny Graham, who scored lots of goals last season, than what the apparent asking price is for Sharp. I may be being a little unfair as I really wanted Maynard to join as he fits the bill. Mackail-Smith also has pace and prob could do a good job in this division and is cheaper too although there is a lot of interest in him. Would you prefer Sharp to these players?
I do not know enough about Maynard to make an informed comment to be honest. His goal scoring rate is quite good however (every 2.5 games). Mackail-Smith did well last year - but did I read somewhere he was 28? Also read that he did not do so well last time in the Championship - willing to be corrected over this point! I have always liked Sharp - so on balance I would go for him over Mackail-Smith. Maybe not Maynard who is younger and has done pretty well - but I understand from what is written that bids of £4M would be needed to get him...
Well I hope you are right Romsey_Saint, I would be happily proved wrong if Sharp signs for us, as looks likely. I just hope our attack is not slow/predictable next season .
Having written my sage-like comments I thought I'd better check Mackail-Smith; he's is either 27 or 28 (getting tired now to work it out) and he scored 10 league goals in over 40 appearances for P'Boro in the Champoionship (phew - glad to see I have some grey cells still functioning!!). Not sure that Sharp would be coming, but we lack pace up front and although Forte has pace, I am not convinced... looks too inconsistent for my liking and we cannot be carrying anybody at this level.
Agreed, we just need some pace upfront as the defenders in this division are of a different stature to League One and quite able and willing to stop the opposition by any means (if they can catch them!).
