City, as yours apart from the away Leeds 74 win as was flat out with flu. Also missed famous Coventry way due to illness. Did go to Highbury for Cheesley goal. Worse one was Hull wembley couldnt get out quick enough.
World Cup Final 1966 England 4 West Germany 2 That was back in the days when we were good and the sport was as it should be and the world heard the famous commentary that went "They think it's over - it is now" when someone thought they heard the final whistle just before England smashed in the 4th - oh wondrous days. The day before when asked how he thought things would go in the final a well known pundit said "If in the morrow Germany should beat us at our national sport it will be acceptable because we have already beaten them twice at their national sport". Not quite sure whether I got that one spot on the mark but there must be someone in 606 land that knows the correct quote and who said it. Other than that I saw Pele play in Santos Brazil and Antonio Rattin play for Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires. Who knows what Rattin's claim to fame is in the eyes of all Englishmen? Dare I forget Bristol City at Wembley against Walsall in front of 72,000+.
I was at that one as well, bumped into Kevin Keegan in a lift in some corporate thingy. City v Liverpool was my favourite game away. Too young to go to any away games whilst in the heady height of old div one.
Anybody remember Fulham playing at the gate with Bobby Moore + George Best in the team, or did i dream it? Not the biggest game but two of the biggest legends of the game.
I watched that Fulham game, Moore was useless. Watched Hunter from ages 32 -36 - different gravy. Was at Arsenal first game in Division 1, Liverpool home in front of 38,000 and Liverpool away in the cup in the 90's. Also at Hull P/O Final which must be the biggest but most enjoyable game ever was Coventry away May 1977.
Most of the Wembley/Millenium stadium games involving City including sadly, the Hull game. A lot of the games when City were in the old first division including Nottingham Forest under Cloughie when they came up and won the league the following year. Quality team and one of my lasting memories in football is Peter Withe running into the box whilst pointing to John Robertson exactly where he wanted the ball, getting it and scoring. Also Villa, Man Utd and beating Liverpool in one of the last games of the season twice 2 to stay up (luckily each time, they had already won the title). Amazing to think now that 38,000 were in the ground. My Dad used to take me in the open end (now the Atyeo). Anfield FA Cup in 1994 on my birthday, best present ever...! Chester in 1984 when we climbed back out of the basement and many, many more...
All citys wembley games and millstad games. Best for me Coventry away in the old league 1,that was something special.
My brother was a big Liverpool fan went with him to both 4-3 results with Faustino Asprilla upfront for Newcastle and David James in goal for the scousers. Think Robbie Fowler and possibly Stan Collymore scored winners respectively. I watched the fa cup victory over the scousers with 38000 in ground, was in park end could hardly breath.
I do It was a week before the 1975 FA Cup Final against West Ham which they lost 2-0. Understandably none of the Fulham players wanted to get injured against us, and we won comfortably 3-1 I think.
Will those kind of memories ever return to the City supporters - NO. Wouldn't it be nice if you could recreate all the best dreams of the past and move them in to today and relive them? If you are a pervert and seen the glorious ladies posted on another thread then you know what I mean, even though my Victor Meldrew side wants to say disgusting the real me says mmmmmm.
There was fighting in the enclosure & someone in the Eastend gave Peter Mellor (gk-correct name?) a dart in his back
Blimey yes, I'd forgotten that ! He was a good keeper. Very blonde, almost white hair if my (fading) memory serves ?
V Hull playoff final. Fantastic weather, great ambience, great banter with the Hull fans but no happy ending......
'If by chance Germany should beat us today at our national sport, we can always say we've beaten them twice at theirs... ' Vincent Mulchrone, Daily Mail reporter.
1996 European Nations final Germany v Czech Republic. 1963 England v Brazil and England v Rest of the World City. FR Trophy v Bolton, because it was the first even if there was a bigger Gate v Stoke. FA Cup with City. Villa away 1957 Spurs away 1967 or 68 Liverpool away 1993 Rovers at home 1958 Blackpool at home 1959 the biggest home gate of my lifetime at over 42,000. League Portsmouth at home 1976 Man U away 1978 with Kevin Mabbutt hat trick. Arsenal away 1976 Cheesley et all. European Cup 1961 Spurs 8 - 1 Gornik of Poland. 56,000
Nice one Safc83. Did you know that or was the internet involved? For some reason I thought it was a well know pundit and that name doesn't ring a bell. For those that remember one newspaper had the next day headline of West Ham 4 West Germany 2.
