As well as the big money signings who prove to be major successes, there are quite a lot who also turn out to be complete disasters. Talk of United signing Martial for 36m and Chelsea signing Pogba for ~80m made me think: which transfers have provided the least value for money over the last few seasons? I've listed some of the obvious ones below to get started but would be interested in anyone else's thoughts: Andy Carroll - 35m: Came as no surprise to anyone that he flopped given he was signed by one of the most inept managers in the leagues recent history, but it was the price tag that really makes this one stand out. 15m would probably have been too much, but not content with that, Kenny threw an extra 20m down the gutter in a true panic buy. A few games spent lumbering around like a prehistoric creature wondering what kind of world he'd re emerged to, then spent the rest of the time injured and was shipped out the following season. Adam Lallana - 25m Lallana looked useful at Southampton in a team full of young talent, but given his age it still amused most of the footballing fraternity when Brendan Rodgers blew a large proportion of the Suarez money on him. Achieved nothing in his first season and is probably wishing he'd stayed at Southampton. Lazar Markovic - 25m The word on everyone's lips when Rodgers spunked another hefty wedge of the Suarez money up the wall was "who?" Markovic did his best to answer that question by spending prolonged periods of time on the bench, running down blind alleys and getting loaned out after his first season. His only noteworthy contribution was his sending off against the mighty Basel, which helped Liverpool fail to qualify from the easiest Champions League group in living memory. Roberto Firmino - 30m Liverpool are a club with a reputation for selling their best players to bigger clubs. When Raheem Sterling departed to Man City, Liverpool fans got excited about their chance to right the wrongs of the previous transfer window. Rodgers embarked upon this quest by shelling out 30m on another small time player, who he proceeded to stick on the bench for his first few matches. Time proved that this was a sensible decision as when starting, Firmino was the equivalent of playing with 10 men. Christian Benteke - 33m The rest of the Sterling money (and then some) went on another panic buy in the form of Benteke. Benteke is most comparable to Lallana in so much as he looked a decent player at his previous club, but when forced into a round hole at Liverpool with their nothing football style he has looked like a duck out of water. Will again be wishing he chose more wisely.
Way too early on Firmino and Benteke. I especially think Benteke would actually come good. I would rather have him at United than this Martial guy.
