Has Fernando Torres now become the biggest most expensive flop in Premier League history, well, football history.. at 50m?

I know we've had a few but I would take Carroll over Torres at this stage and anyone thinking different is living in the past

Going to sound soft here but I think Torres is a reminder that players no matter what they are paid are human beings too.

Even before going to Chelsea we could see this guy descending into serious emotional problems. Now obviously I don't know what he's like at home but at the very least he looks like he despises his job.

Surely he has enough money to just say "feck it!" And walk away. He & Chelsea fans would be a lot happier (maybe not Abramovich lol) but at least each manager wouldn't be put in the situation of having to force the rest of the team to play around a guy that just doesn't want to be there.

    Sad to see.

  3. I highly doubt it but, do clubs insure against players deciding to retire...?

Torres is the worst by far and Carroll was bad too but I would throw James Milner in there with one of the worst ever, he is as bad if not worse than Downing and he cost £24mil.

  5. I think you have to consider inflation is these things. Yes, £50m is the biggest in terms of funds but not so much a standout when you consider players fees over time. Tomas Brolin was always a massive flop but seems minor compared to nowadays figures <ok>

Not really his fault but Owen Hargreaves? 17 million plus (4 years x 'oooo's) for 27 appearances & 2 goals.

    What about Veron?????
    or
    Shevechenko???????
    or
    Kluivert??????

At least Carroll and torres have at some point in their careers been successful in the Premier League.....The names above came with massive potential and flopped like a Bella Emberg hand shandy

I think Chelsea fans would agree to Shevechenko being up there if not top of the flop pile.Shame too as he was great prior to joining them for both Club/Country.

I don't think we can know until we sell Carroll. If we sell him for £17m to West Ham we will have lost a hell of a lot less than Chelsea will with Torres, who is probably valued at around the same

One ? would suffice. There are ?s in the OP.
Kluivert Sheva both at the end of their careers, neither cost 50m.

It is not just as with Veron that he is not cutting it, Veron didn't cut that shape Torres does when it is not going perfectly, Torres is not only not scoring, he looks like an unhappy pappy altogether. I've always said his issues were mental, I think the guy is actually depressed atm, he gets ups and downs, his move to us was a major up and the results were there for all to see

biggest flop could be tough as everyone has their own opinion. For me it is Carroll, at least with Torres he was lethal for us and a recent World Cup and Euro Cup winner. Andy Carroll had half a season and was injured. Just mind boggling.

Talking of buys.. he wasn't a slop for 24 mil for us, for 50m.. imagine if it was us that signed a 50m player who was less effective than Mandy.. it was bad enough with deadline ripoff andy

I think the Torres one is def right there as well, just think the Andy one was just...... I mean 35 mil for a player who was just recently in the championship. That sort of figure is shelled out for someone who is top class or at least has some history to prove it.

His importance to Newcastle scoring rate and lateness and timing of the transfer added 10m at least mate, the same may have added 15m to Torres price also..

I think RA had a man crush on Nando

Think he will go to United but just imagine Sneijder ( another Ajax and maybe played with Suarez, not sure) pulliing the strings in the middle.

or we can get Darren Bent on loan. <ok>

    <yikes>

Disagree, Milner's a good player worth at least half of what was paid for him. Robinho, Veron(twice!), Bentley and Aquilani all spring to mind. I think it's arguable that Carroll is the worst on the fact that he couldn't even get into the team regularly, like Bentley but with a much bigger price tag. After that I'd go for Torres and Shevchenko.
