A bit of YouTube diversion for Sunday morning.

Before my time, but this clip is from 1970 after Big Mal had slagged off Mullery after the World Cup.

The Big Match got them together for Mullery to respond, with Jimmy Hill umpiring.

Thought some of you might enjoy seeing genuine opinions instead of bland platitudes we are used to seeing now.

That 1970 ITV World Cup panel was 'TV gold', that panel format had never been tried before and the original panel of Malcolm Allison, Derek Dougan, Paddy Crerand and Bob McNab has never been bettered. That World Cup was one of the best ever as well.

The Big Match in the 70s was far and away better than MOTD, I think Jimmy Hill's innovative ideas had so much to do with that and once the BBC poached him neither channel quite got near that ITV era.

You're dead right about the bland panellists we're subjected to these days, MOTD can be like watching paint dry. The Jeff Stelling Saturday panel is the best of the current bunch, it's a matter of the right chemistry between the four...
