In 1985 Scotland dramatically beat Wales to qualify for the 1986 World Cup. Minutes after the final whistle Scotland football manager Jock Stein was dead. He suffered a heart attack. As the two teams prepare once more to meet in a World Cup qualifier, former Scottish international Pat Nevin, Sunday Times columnist and close friend of Stein, Hugh McIlvanney and Mark Pougatch recall the tragic evening in Cardiff. He looks back on the incredible career of Stein and the legacy he left after his death. In this special podcast you can hear from Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Gordon Strachan and Graeme Souness amongst others.

Nice one Reb. I remember it happening in passing but dropping my guard for a moment, my papá also died of a heart attack in October 1985 at a relatively young age which overshadowed everything else at that time so obviously the great Jock Stein's passing didn't register as much as it may have otherwise. I've never looked into it but have the impression that he never really got the credit he deserved from our club for his achievements until after his death ... but then again I suppose that could be said about everything and anyone not being really appreciated until they are no longer with us.
