We'd better get used to it because it's going to become very, very common. My dad had it mildly from 77 but died three years later before it got too bad.M-in-Law has it quite bad at 85.Dunc's came on a bit early as most cases don't begin until late 70's. In my youth people used to retire and many of them didn't last beyond 70 so it wasn't as common then.
Very sad Dave, but doesn´t take away from the player or person that he was, rotten infliction though.
Rumours about Big Dunc been circulating for a long time now, very, very sad. The term 'legend' is bandied around a lot but Big Dunc is a true legend please log in to view this image
Have a read of this. Another player to thank Colchester for. http://www.ftbpro.com/xposts/rick.w...wich-city-was-built?ref=facebook&team=Norwich
Same here, it brought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat, as Mick says, Duncan's wife must be more devastated than anybody, bless her for the years she has tried to cope!
Many years ago, my dad asked if one of the Norwich players could come to our Sunday School to present the prize giving. The club said that they would try to send someone from the club, but as it was the week after the League Cup final against Spurs, they couldn't be sure who it would be. During the week leading up to the cup final, my dad got a phone call from Duncan Forbes himself, saying that he would do it whatever. When dad asked him what fee he wanted, all Big Dunc said was, "Just give me and the wife tea". How thrilled was I to have Big Dunc at my house for Sunday tea? He was brilliant. He spent more time signing autographs than he did giving out the prizes True gent.
Very sad news indeed... For us south of the border, this is the Budgie who tops the list in Ipswich Demonology, a proper hardman defender, his place in East Anglian football folklore is assured. (Comes across as a nice bloke too.)
i remember chatting to another city fan some time ago about statues and who would you pick if norwich erected a statue outside carrow road. he immediately announced "forbes. duncan forbes". there was no hesitation. now he was before 'my time' so i've never seen him play or even if he was any good, but am i right in thinking he was captain when we first gained promotion to the top flight? would he be a good pick if a statue were to become a reality?
Yeah, I think he was your captain when you gained promotion to the old Div 1...It was a different age then, when defenders were allowed to defend, Leeds had Norman Hunter, Chelsea had Ron "Chopper" Harris, we had Allan Hunter, you had Duncan Forbes etc...but there I go, banging on about history...
One of my all time greats. I remember he and Kevin Keelan were effectively the only 2 that turned up for the Tottenham League Cup Final, he played his heart out. He also famously played with a punctured lung. Can you imagine anyone doing the same fromt he current era? He would be in my all time Norwich City team, the guy was and is a hero. God bless you Duncan.
I lost my grandfather last year (just shy of his 98th birthday) and he suffered from Alzheimer’s. I reckon he must have suffered from it for the last 15 years of his life, with the last 10 or so in a care home (Hellesdon)... Its a horrible disease which affects those closest to the person as much as the person themselves. For those interested here is a recent article (last week) on Alzheimer's from the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-24462699 Forbes was before my time. But I can appreciate his significance at the club during an important time in our history...
There is an issue about heading the footballs around in the 60s and seventies. Anyone remember Jeff Astle whose mental deterioration was blamed on this issue. We may see more of this unfortunately
Big Dunc was always the heart of Col U, loved watching him and was gutted when he left to join City, a true legend at both clubs, wish him well.
