Interesting comparison to the squad Steve Bruce inherited (plus a couple of his own signings). I know our league position has implroved year by year but I think the squad has as well

2009 Squad 2011 Squad

Goalkeepers

Gordon Gordon
Carson Mingolet
Fulop Westwood

Defenders

Bardsley Bardsley
McCartney Brown
Ferdinand Ferdinand
Nosworthy Bramble
Collins O’Shea
Anderson Turner
McShane Laing
Richardson Richardson
Da Silva Adams

Midfield

Tanio Cattermole
Leadbitter Colback
Edwards Elmohamady
Cana Gardner
Malbranque Larsson
Reid Vaughan
Henderson Meyler
Murphy Sessegnon

Strikers

Campbell Campbell
Jones Gyan
Bent Whickham
Healy Ji

I have tried to keep them “like for like” for a comparison and have not included the likes of Jordan Cook, Lynch, Noble or new signing to be McClean.

What do you think?

again imo these are better mig ,brown, bramble oshea, turner, colback, sess gyan against the players you have although like com says there are some unproven in a red and white shirt <bubbly>

Loved Steed but he couldn't score goals or take free kicks / corners, so it's Larrson

But that's what i'm getting at, when we bought him he could score scores, same as all the other players, we buy them cos they are supposed to be good.

So we can't compare Larsson to Steed yet.

Don't forget Steeds record at Fulham, he was exceptional.

But Steed was playing for us not Fulham.

Just for the record, he scored 32 in 172 apprearances for Fulham, 6 in 62 appreances for Tottenham, and ONE in 102 appearances for us. Hardly outstanding. Admittedly he could play five-a-side in a telephone box, but having a midfielder who cannot score goals is useless, a bit like Henderson.

Larsson like Gardner scores the ocasional goal, Larsson scored against us last season. Did Steed score at all last season? No. I was there when he scored at Hull but that was a long time ago. After losing Judas it is imperative that we start scoring goals from all over the park, pre-season has told us that.

Well we'll have to wait and see how the new signings do, before we can cast judgement.

I think the point comm was making is that, in the same way that Steed could score at his other clubs but couldn't score here, Larsson could score/assist at his other clubs, but might not be able to score/assist here. Vaughn could create at Blackpool but for whatever reason might not create here. Brown and O'Shea could defend and keep clean sheets at Utd but might not be able to here.

I agree that on paper our squad is much better! Every one change is an improvement (bar Bent- prick) however we need to hope their quality on paper translates to quality in the red and white! But things are looking up :)

They can hardly do worse than last season's midfield for goals, Henderson 1, Steed 0, Cattermole 0
