So who do you think has been our best signing? I'm thinking that recent history may prevail but maybe there are a few older heads some of our veteran posters may have a hankering for? The man behind the scenes, the gaffer, a star player? Laudrup Huw Jenkins Michu Toshack Britton Naturally feel free to shoot me down for missing some obvious choices but hell, debate is good. oh, and dai can't vote for himself! ;-)
Martinez for me, as a player he made a big contribution and as a manager he was really the architect of where we are today
Impossible to say for me. Toshack ? Trundle ? both inspired the club and raised its profile . Martinez ? Laudrup? Michu ? James Thomas ? Leon Britton ? Rodger Freestone ? the list goes on and on.. While i love Huw Jenkins to bits its a bit unfair on the other members of the board to single out one person, as far as im aware Huw was put in place to act as a buffer and be the mouthpiece of others, its not his vision its a vision of many people, each one deserves massive credit, thats not to slight Jenkins in anyway though.
Hmmm....everyone has flaws or weaknesses in getting this vote so I've gone for the one that has the least and who has been the most instrumental in our overall success. I agree that Jenkins is just one member of the Board but as representative of that Board, and an influential figure within it whose opinion counts for a great deal he gets it for me. Without that influence I doubt we'd have the success we've enjoyed in recent times. I fully concede he couldn't have achieved what he has for our Club without others, but his astute managerial signings have not gone unnoticed in the media, and they're right (I was worried about an interest in Graeme Jones though!). Martinez was his best appointment, as that heralded a sea-change in our philosophy as a Club that resonates today. As NJ says, we've had some cracking people here over the years so it is a difficult one. Of the ones on offer: Laudrup: It's all been said - and he's getting better. But he'll have to do it for more than half a season to get my vote. Michu: Utterly brilliant but might fade as defenders know more about him - who knows? Again, not here long enough. Britton: Great servant and a real talent - but flawed (who isn't?) and replaceable. Toshack: Achieved great things but we also went down as fast as we went up. Nice thread
I've voted for Huw Jenkins but not as an individual. I see him as a front man for the Board and it is actually they who have my vote. As KJ says, ML and Michu need to be here a lot longer before topping a pole such as this but I'm sure Michael Laudrup will go on to become am all time Swansea great.
If you're talking our best signing ever, how can it not be Michael Laudrup? If you're asking who's done more for our club or had more success, then it's a tough one, but Michael Laudrup is one of the biggest names in world football and he decided to sign up to our club for 2 years. Whatever he achieves in that time, he's the best signing the club has ever made
we never signed huw so thats out for starters...leon,monk,martinez and magic daps are our greatest signings. the new guys are not legends yet they have only been at the club two minutes, latchford was a great signing also.
Agree Dai, I was thinking of Latchford before I saw who the vote was for. Due to his length of service and him being a top pro, never see him rolling round after a tackle, just get up and gets on with it. Whilst not being blessed with flair of other players, for me a good old pro, I'm going for Leon. He needs to be put in the Swansea Hall of Fame!!
HIt has to be Huw for me...He and the rest of the board have been the main reason we have been so good. I will say though that the singing of Martinez for me, seemed lucky...Martinez started the change, and came in with a philosophy for the club as a whole, the way we conduct ourselves....Which in turn changed Huws views etc But If Martinez hadn't come along, and we had kept getting managers like Jacket, who all though did well for us, were just normal managers. Then I don't think we would be where we are. But since the change, Huw and co have continued it and made some really good choices...So Huw!
Michu gets my vote, since I am simply answering the question asked. Signing of the season in our best season for eons. His resale valuation alone could keep our team alive in the Prem for a further year without any TV rights and the exposure he brought us. Martinez 2nd and Leon 3rd. Tosh and ML tied for 4th. HJ does not act alone so does not count imho.
I knew I'd miss a few! didn't want too many options in the poll either as that would have killed the debate with stats. BTW re: Huw jenkins huw jenkins = the board/supporters trust if preferred. By the signing of Huw Jenkins I mean that he is a great signing because he has been so instrumental in our success. He signed a contract so he was signed ;-)
how can michu be the signing of the season when he has not been here a season yet and could leave at the end of it....A good signing is someone who has played well and stayed for a good while. the same as sir mike...If he does not better Brendans record which i hope he will then brendan would have the edge over him...
Difficult question to answer. Latchford, Rajkovic, Curtis, Tosh - many contenders from that era. Before them, my personal all time hero and favourite was Ivor. However, you could make an argument for Scott Sinclair - his goals in the Championship (and at Wembley) were crucial in getting us to the PL. Would we have got there without him? Would he (or Borini) have joined if not for BR?
He's already bettered Brendan's record. As for Michu, not only is he our singing of the season, but arguably the Premier League signing of the season at such a low price
Not necessarily, a good signing for me is someone who is value for money, contributes to a significant level that without them we would struggle during the period of time that they are with us. (i.e. if they left tomorrow or in this instance during the transfer window, would we all go **** now what!!) I think Michu fits that profile quite well.
