It can be the most spectacular, important or well crafted. You choose, it may have not yet been scored.. ( Two games left. ) I'll add up the results, and we'll have our own goal of the year contest. The result will be posted on New Years Eve night.
Goal of the year, that’s a tough call. There are certainly a host of options. From last season we have Taarabt against Coventry where he cut in between two of their defenders and curled his shot into the far corner, Routledge in the same match where he showed touch and control that Jamie Mackie could only dream about from Taarabt’s exquisite pass. Routledge’s winner at Reading from Faurlin’s inch perfect, first time through ball, Miller’s winner at home to Leicester from Routledge’s equally good through ball or Taarabt’s first equaliser in Cardiff. Taarabt and Smith against Watford must be contenders because of the importance of those goals. There aren’t so many contenders from his season as yet. Smith at Everton as our first goal back in the big time, Faurlin at Wolves maybe, Helguson’s penalty against Chelsea for obvious reasons or possibly Young at Stoke. I’m hoping this choice gets usurped by Taarabt’s imperious winner at Arsenal, but I’m going for Routledge’s goal against Coventry. Taarabt’s lofted pass with the outside of his boot was magnificent and was matched by Routledge’s instant control and finish. A top quality goal to secure yet another 3 points on our march towards promotion.
Whether it is goal of the year I am not sure but my favourite is when Tarbs was on the left crossed with the outside of his right foot to Routledge who took it on his right foot and scored with his left. Sheer brilliance from them both.
Do you realise how many times you've mentioned Taarabt!!? God, what a tragedy that we haven't seen the best of him this season. I think my goal of the year would be Adel's first equalizer against Cardiff....but there were a few that were probably just as good.
Faurlin, has he scored ? I thought it hit two players, hit him and went in.If it didnt it could only have been a lucky kick.
Yes I did think that at the time, Routledge too, still that is the way I see it. I'll freely admit that I was happy to see him left out of the team earlier in the season, but I'm not now. Maybe he was carrying an injury, was not fit or was suffering from the effects of Ramadan, but he was a pale shadow of what we had seen last season. Now we need him more than ever.
It was Smith away to Everton for me. After the despair of Bolton, this goal and this victory signalled that we were back with the big boys.
