After last nights debacle and reading through the Worst Performances thread I thought we could do with a few more joyful memories of better games to lighten the gloomy mood around the place !! 3-1 against Inter Milan (when they were good!) 9-1 against Wigan 5-1 against Arsenal in the league cup semi 08 5-1 against Chelsea in the league cup semi 02 4-1 against Man U New years day 96 3-1 against Arsenal in 91 ?-? Against Fulham this Sunday !! Spurs dont really do clean sheets do they its not our way So add to that good people looking forward to musings from the dark ages (60s and 70s ) especially !!
4-0 v Fulham in the FA cup about 5 years ago was a great performance with some cracking goals. It was supposed to be a tight game and one many thought we would lose but 2 great volleyed goals from Keane and Berbatov with a cheeky little lob for the 4th gave us a comfortable win. 4-0 v Liverpool last year was great too as they were the glory supported team when I was growing up and it was lovely to see us smash them. Seems unthinkable but I think Adebayor scored twice!
There have been some good wins & performances over the years. I went to this lot 9-0 bristol rovers 5-0 Arsenal '82/83 2-0 feyenoord away 83 7-2 Southampton late 90's 5-1 Chelsea 02 3-2 arsenal away And of course St Hotspur day, 14th April 1991.
Several stick in my memory over all these years, but particularly enjoyable was Spurs 7 Mousers 2 ( 1963 I think) I was there with my mates. Terrific game.
I would second Notso and the match against the Barcodes last year. Going back a while, (and a match I have mentioned before) is an away league game at Palace in the early 80's. some of the attacking football played that day by the likes of Hoddle, Ardiles, Crooks and Archibald was absolutely stunning - would have been a match for Barca at heir best.
Is this going to be a shorter thread than the worst performances one? I'll throw in 1-0 against City to get us the CL and the 2-1 against Chelsea.
Tottenham 4 Man Utd 1, 1996. , one of the best games/atmospheres ive been at since the premier league started. Chrissy Armstrong was awesome, run man utd ragged and the sheringham/armstrong partnership was one of the best in the league. Click this link www.aboutmanutd.com/man-u-matches/01-01-1996-tottenham-hotspur.html and you see how strong the utd team was. Although no match for rocket ronnie, nethercott and darren caskey!
Think there was a great win in the 70's we beat Man U at OT 4-1 Martin Peters scored all 4 Who could forget the 3-1 v Inter in the CL great night that!
I think the 0-1 win in the San Siro to knock out AC Milan was pretty exceptional. Almost in tears when Sandro won the ball, Lennon broke away and set up Crouch to score. Plus an opportunity to post this again
Here's the same show from the other night: Skip to 3.50 for the far less dramatic heartbreak.
We have been concentrating on our performance, but we have to say a word about the fantastic 100mph effort from Inter. if that had been our team we would have been proud of the heroic failure.
Not disagreeing, but it was a bit of a nothing to lose situation though, wasn't it Spurf. The very least they needed to do was put in an effort, which they did. Our tactics and generally insipid performance just made their job easier.
Got to say another performance that stood out for me was in the 2009/2010 season and the 5-1 thrashing of Hull City at there place with a Defoe hat trick.
Well,Spurs 13 v Crewe 2 comes to mind after a 2-2 draw. Jimmy Greaves (years before Messi was born) feeding on Nottingham Forest every season.A 9-2 win comes to mind! A favourite story was the 1960-1 Cup Final that gave us the double. Bobby Smith played and scored and also made the other goal for Dyson. The remarkable thing was he played on "one leg" The night before,he sneaked out of the hotel not telling Bill Nick,to get a shot for his leg.He didn't want to miss the final! The rest is history. Another win I enjoyed was the 1967 Cup Final win versus Chelsea because one of my favourites scored the winning goal. Frank Saul of course.Never a great player but he worked his butt off in the Spurs cause! A barmy game I remember was against Wolves.1-1 at halftime,it finished 7-4 to us.Every time someone shot at goal, they scored,it seemed! But the biggest of all was Bill Nick's first game as manager of Spurs v Everton. We won 10-4!!!!!!!
p.s. Talking about the 1967 Cup Final reminds of the semi final v Notts Forest.Blooming hard game!Forest were a very good team thena s later.....but,again, the winner was scored by Frank Saul. One of the greatest goals I've seen.I couldn't believe it He picked up the ball(not literally of course!) and ran towards the Forest box and let fly an absolute screamer!I can still see it now...... One day I'd like to see it on dvd.......
winning in 1979 or 1980 at old trafford in the FA Cup...ossie scored a great winner after we went down to 10 men when our keeper the late Aleksic had his jaw broken and hoddle had to go in goal and we'd already used our sub. the 81 cup semi final replay v wolves...ricky Villa scored a screamer as we won 3 nil. Southampton in 92 or 93 when we scored 4 goals in 6 minutes beating southampton 5-2 in the cup replay in 94 - rocket ronnies hatrick
