Who do you think was the best ex P*mpey player to play for Saints not including players who played for P*mpey after leaving Saints? For me i would have to say Barry Horne.

Think this maybe a quick thread. Barry Horne by some distance ahead of Crouch.

"Barry Horne, from the half way line" v Bolton, cracker.

Wasn't that goal in the last minute or injury time in a cup game ? I'm sure it was near the end to make it 2-2 IIRC

Saints always do well when they have a welshman in the side. e.g.

    Ron Davies
    Peter Rodgigues
    Barry Horne
    Gareth Bale
    Alan Curtis

Correct. Was deep into injury time, many of the crowd were leaving and surged back after he scored. I remember being on the lower east terrace and ended up on the pitch somehow, just got picked up by the swell of people bundling and god knows how I got over the wall at the front. Took the game to extra time, where Barry Horne scored again to win it.

Magnificent goal. Remember it well as I was in Sweden instead of The Dell but they were showing it live over there. I think you could have probably heard my shouts of joy from Southampton when that went in..........

IMO, Crouch edges it. When he came to the club, not only did I go to 1st team games regularly, but also reserve games, They were often held at St Marys. The first time I saw Crouch play he was absolutely head and shoulders above [sorry, couldn't resist] others in terms of his skill. Good player.

You are correct. He does have a degree and the last I heard he was working at a school in Chester teaching the sciences.

I still maintain that he was the best ex Skate that played for us. Crouch is not in the same league.

I always thought he came to us from Wolves and then I checked on the internet and discovered that while he did play for Wolves for quite a time he came to us from Manchester Utd.

Yeah Barry Horne, although if Crouchie had stayed a couple of years more he would have matched him. Speaking of Skates, they are getting a wee bit sensitive about our fine start to the season. I replied to a jibe about Rickie's weight, (how original) with a few facts about our respective points totals so far and had my post removed. Considering all the crap we put up with on the old 606 for 2 years from the likes of Minging, I think they overreacted a tad.

Which other players have a degree, i can think of David Weatherall but these days kids are encouraged to ditch everything except the football to focus, which is a real shame, especially for all those who never make it.

They're also a little bit behind the times. Rickie's now as lean as the Tower of Pisa, and as fit as a butcher's dog. That's a compliment, I've just written there, if anyone from Pompey is confused.

...has an MEng. a post grad academic degree in engineering and worked for British Aerospace, before becoming a battering ram with often strangely vasilined eyebrows - must have been aerodynamic

I know he never came to Saints, but Pompey's ex-goalie, Shaka Hislop has a degree in mechanical engineering, obtained through NASA. So when he says something isn't rocket science, he's almost certainly right.
