Crap defending is a recurring theme at this WC.

I relate great world cups to where I watched the games and who with.

    France 98.

In my mid twenties, living off Prinny Ave as a single lad and England were half decent.
Saw all the England games down the battle cruiser with my oppo's.

Now I'm in my early 40's and sit at home watching the games on my Jack Jones in a boring as frig village.

Every game could end up 6-5 from now on and it won't beat France 98.

England could have won this World Cup and it might, just might, have equalled France 98.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

74 seeing the Cruyff turn. Unbelievable. All of em to 90 cos after that there are no surprises. Famous foreign players were just names you never got to see unless it was the WC or the yearly European Cup Final. Jack Charlton commentating calling them Ajax not Eyeax.

I saw England win it, nothing will top that but the Brazil of 1970 was a thing of beauty, they was ahead of the times.

This is easily the best one I can remember.

Saying that, the only ones I remember are 2002, 2006 and 2010. Was too young to remember France 98, but based on footage I have seen that was way better than the ones I remember.

1982 World Cup in Spain. Watched a lot of it in the South of France. I remember I wore the Kevin Keegan/ Paul Mariner shirt as I called it. We played a full 11 a-side game against a team of French waiters on a concrete pitch and I ripped my legs to shreads. We got absolutely battered but made some good mates. Remember someone got shot in the bar we had just left one night.

WC70 is regarded as the best.FACT.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_FIFA_World_Cup

Many people considered our 1970 team superiors to the 66 one.

Only Gordon Banks' squitters for the QF robbed us of a SF against Italy.

Remember Mexico 1970, I was 7. Bobby Moore got arrested for nicking a watch or something just before it all started. "Back Home" was the team anthem.

There's been a few themes in this WC. Loads of goals obviously, loads of play acting on the other hand. Big difference from the PL is the number of red cards. How many have we had? Seems like only 1 or 2 and they were for violent conduct. In the PL you seem to get 3 or 4 every week for daft tackles where they take a big touch and then dive in trying not to lose it. Is that a sign of the difference in tempo between the world game and the English game and is that one of the reasons England have struggled to create enough chances the last few years? I.e. are we used to rushing about trying to score as fast as possible, where other countries might take their time and probe for an opening.

    Mooro was framed.

    But he didn't complain.

Straight back in the team-no counselling or blubbing.

    Different gravy back then.

I enjoyed France 98. Was my first World Cup i'd ever seen, and watched it all.

Baddiel & Skinner rehashing 3 lions, & the Germans had Kuntz on the back of the shirt, in the video
    Vindaloo
Beckham scoring a class freekick vs Columbia & then getting sent off in the next match.
Owen's fantastic goal & the whole Argentina match.
    Dodgy Romanian bleached blonde haircuts.
Spain getting knocked out in the group stage.
Scotland losing in the first match vs Brazil & getting knocked out in the groups, & my mam crying about it.
    Bergkamp's sublime goal against Argentina
Brazil looking quality up until the final & the Ronaldo scare before the kick off. Probably shouldn't have played in truth.
England fans kicking off with the Gendarmes.
