so...Joey was lambasted for his opinion - which while probably inaccurate, you certainly can't begrudge gim for being passionate, opinionated, and self confident.

But: Who are the current best English midfielders?
On current form and availability to international squad, not counting short-term injuries.

    in my opinion:

    1. Scott Parker (West Ham)
    2. Joey Barton (Newcastle Utd)
    3. Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
    4. Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)
    5. Aaron Lennon (Tottenham)
    6. James Milner (Man City)
    7. Frank Lampard (Chelsea)
    8. Kevin Nolan (Newcastle Utd)
    9. Ashley Young (Aston Villa)
    10. Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham)

I'd have both Kev Nolan and Ashley Young above Lampard but other than that I more or less agree.

    Why no Chris Eagles though?..

Agree with this, except Gerrard being 3rd. He never plays!

I'm not doing the ten, but I think without question your 3 top English centre mids this season (and I do include Barton in that, despite his starting position he doesn't play like a winger barring the setup for Lovenkrands goal v Wolves) are Parker, Wilshere and Barton, probably in that order.

Regardless of that though I still think its a fact that Gerrard and Lampard are still better (despite injuries this season) and as much as Capello wrongly claims to base his selection on form, it'd be wrong to drop some of our top players based on it, and again as much as Joey deserves a squad place if he's going to make comments like those he did he's too disruptive to have just sat on the bench.

Scott Parker is a cut above the rest of the England team. He should be captain.

Parker, Wilshere and Barton, in no particular order, should be starting for England, or at the very least be in every squad on current form.

Gerrard has been injured this year and when he wasnt he didnt really stand out.
Lampard is ageing, has never really done it for England and hasnt done anything of note this season. Yes he's scored goals, but if that's all you need then Nolan would be first in the squad.
Barry is painfully average. I dont like England but it still makes me sad to think he regularly represents the country.
The rest on the list are mostly wingers, except Milner whose career has been ****ed by City, and Huddlestone, who has been injured this season.

The Plank Society take great offence at that slur.

Planks don't hit DJs repeatedly in cowardly attacks due to musical differences and then lie to the courts.

Young's been on fire of late, he should be higher.

As long as the two most irratating divers in the league - Downing and Adam Johnson - aren't in there, I'm happy.

I have got to agree that Scott Parker, is by faaaar the best english midfielder on current form. However, Joey Barton isnt that far behind him. And the sad thing is, even though Fabio Capello said he'd pick the best 'onform' players, he never really has...always the big names. So, for that reason, and also with his past...Joey Barton will never player for England again. It's tosh really, because he'd have alot more passion than Frank Lampard, and Gerrard who dont look like they give a ****.

Joey Barton and Scott Parker play for Newcastle United and West Ham respectively, two clubs that simply do not exist.

Over the course of the whole season Barton and Parker are probably on a par. Of late Parker has been better, Joey being injured hasn't helped him. But earlier this seaon Barton was out performing Parker. They are both integral to their respective teams and both have undoubted influence over their team mates. Both drive their teams on and lead by example. Joey edges it in assists I think, both have 5 goals to my knowledge. Very hard to split the two.

Parker has 5 league, 2 League Cup
Joey has 4 league, 1 FA Cup
So Parker edges it on goals
