My own view is that Fernando Alonso is currently the best F1 driver at the moment - he is an intelligent driver and combines raw speed, good overtaking skills, excellent tyre management, and a very high level of consistency all together - making him the most complete driver on the grid. Retired greats and the current F1 drivers also agree that Alonso is the best. In the next few years as drivers I think Vettel will be the best F1 driver, as he is already an excellent driver and can only get better. I will try to set up a poll. The poll is about who you believe is currently the best F1 driver - and is nothing to do with who your favourite F1 driver is .
Truthfully Jose, Alonso is just slightly better than Lewis. He has more focus on getting the job done and takes his role as a driver more seriously. Who knows Lewis might get his act back together as he has potential but time might run out as Mclaren will go down hill when Mercedes leave. So currently I think the top 5 currently are: 1. Alonso 2. Hamilton 3. Vettel 4. Kubica 5. Rosberg
May as well be slightly controversial: Kamui Kobayashi. Not seen his full potential in F1 yet, but he's shown that he is willing to overtake whenever there is an opportunity, he can defend well against drivers in faster cars, and his qualifying pace is sound. Of all the drivers who have come into the sport in the last two seasons, I'd say he's the best (overall). Honourable mention for Kovalainen, purely for his performances in Race of Champions events, and the fire extinguisher moment last season.
No Kobayashi?? I wouldn't put him top, but in the top 5 with Kubica/Schumacher, Hamilton, Button, Webber and Barrichello
I have to agree with you there, although I would put Schumacher at No.5 - because I think that if the car and tyres are better suited to him, he will beat Rosberg.
Wheres the option for Narain Karthikeyan? I'm not even a fan but in polls like this I always have to vote for Schumi because at the end of the day he always seems to come out on top. Maybe the last decade of F1 has drilled that into me but under estimate him at your own risk
thanks nick. to be fair th best current driver would be the world champ therefore best driver currently = vettel
Spanner82, I'm curious as to why you say Felipe Massa. He got completely schooled by Alonso last year (although this was largely due to tyre problems). Do you think he will beat Alonso if he is comfortable with the tyres?
Massa's not been the same since his accident, i'm going to take a brutal line on this one as he is a great guy, but i think they should replace him with somebody who can challenge Fernando.
I dont know actually, I just like him as a driver, but yeah I think he can do better with correct tyres
Yeah, I think Felipe is a great guy and I wish him all the best in the future. I hope that it was only the tyres holding him back last year, and that he can do much better this year. That is the only way Ferrari will keep him.
I think it probably is going to be his last year, you see so many rumours floating around about other drivers coming. I feel a bit sorry for him because he was doing a great job until the accident happened, but it could just be a coincidence (or the tyre problems you mention) that since then he doesn't seem to be the same as he was.
The current best is Vettel, however the best ever has to be Schumacher and hopefully he will be the current best soon too
I think Alonso and Massa will be closer this year, maybe a wins worth to Alonso ahead maybe more. Just remember what happened to Raikkonen, he beat Massa in year 1 got thrashed in year 2. Could it happen again? Could the tyres not suit Alonso? Last time we saw drivers having to conserve their tyres, Alonso was ontop by 21 points. For the tyre preservation reason alone, I'm going to say life will be tough at McLaren, Button should be better in the races but not as strong in qualifying. My Opinions Best All Rounder: Alonso Fastest: Vettel Best overtaker: Hamilton/Kobayashi Best attitude: Rosberg Best under pressure: Alonso Best leader (champ, not team): Alonso/Schumacher
