Just something to make you thinks...

We've had a few appearances in the play offs and are yet to win promotion by anything other than the other finalists being dodgy!!

So a little thread to ask what your best and worsts are from the play offs.

Best - obviously beating the mags in the semi! 6th v 3rd and the scum running on the pitch to try to get to us!! Loved it but was a touch scary as a 14 year old!!

Worst - well there's a few - but the worst Penalty miss I've ever seen in the play offs was Jeff Whitley v Crystal Palace (I think)!! He runs up to the ball... Stops... The keeper dives... And he chips it along the ground to the side he dived!!!!!

The CHarlton Final I don't see as a bad memory other than the defeat - It was a great game of football to watch. The Swindon final was awful - we were terrible from start to finish (1990) - so sad after such jubilation in the semi against the mags!!

The Charlton final was an amazing game of football. I'd love to beat them this time round to get our own back.

The Mags play off has to be the best.....The Palace game was always going to be difficult and has some inevitability about it.

Best...being at St James park for that 2nd leg. That was the best bus journey back to Sunderland ever. Also a mention for the 2-0 Sheff Utd home 2nd leg.

Worst was the performance at Wembley against Swindon. We just never turned up and Wembley was a **** hole.

I was 10 years old. My only trip to Wembley. My lasting memories were outside the stadium, walking up directly towards the twin towers but walking between what seemed like hundreds of supporters having a piss in the bushes, and Tony Norman having a blinder!

Worst has to be the 7 all v Gillingham aet and going down for the first time to the third tier on AWAY GOALS! We must be the only team to have gone down on the away goals rule.

Losing the playoff final against Charlton is the worst I have ever felt over the result of a football match. Watched it on the telly at my mates house, only for my anxiety to kick in and I didnt watch it all and went home, couldnt cope. Found out we lost on penalties through the wonderful media of Ceefax. Im pleased football doesnt affect me like it used to, its not healthy!

There is only one, that night in 1990 in the wind at St James's, our best win since 1973 to me. palace home 2nd leg, we are 2-0 up they are down to 10 men, ready for a Cardiff play off final with WHU, they get a corner in the last minute Poom comes out and misses it the palace player does not, then pens and that was that i blame WHU for that if they had let Wigan win who were 6th they would have made it instead, and Palace were in fantastic form going into the play offs and went on to win it. went to all home semi's and 1990 final, after the mags win and performance i was sure we would go up, but we did by default. Do not think there will be as much drama as the 1990 play offs ever again. 1998 poor first half then wow, that and Man c are the only games they came out with credit. Who this year and what final sunderland vs Portsmouth ? Sunderland vs Don/Peterborough ? sunderland vs Charlton again ? we could play any one of 4 teams in the play offs, amazing.

The Sheffield United second leg at the SOL simply for the best atmosphere ever at the stadium, better than derbies, the lot.

Spine tingling ****. Obviously we ****ed the final but meh, we cleared 100pojnts the next season.

Yes , we are the only team ever to be relegated on away goals.
So when we lost to Palace away 2-3 , I just knew we would win the second leg 2-1 , with the rule having been dropped stopping us from this time benefitting. It was obvious it was going to happen, why oh why wasn’t I down the bookies putting the mortgage on it !

I thought the same as it was typical that the rules changed to screw us. I always think away goals should count but only after extra time.
