There have been some quality African teams that I remember, Morocco back in the 86 World Cup that topped England's group with Timoumi, Cameroon's Roger Mila, Okocha's Nigeria in USA 94, Diouf's Senegal at Korea & Japan 2002 and now Ivory Coast. Got to say, the Ivory Coast look frikkin amazing on paper with 3 players with Arsenal links playing!!!
I remember being stunned when Cameroon beat Argentina at the Italy 90 world cup - but they went on to demonstrate that it was no fluke. I think they've been one of the most consistent teams in terms of representing Africa at World Cups.
Too true. And I have also often wondered why Egypt have not been more consistent on the world stage, and not only in African tournaments. They looked an extremely strong outfit (in an African context) a few years ago. I don't understand why they have gone off the boil now though.
I'd say Nigeria in USA 94 were my favourite team, they played the best football and had some amazing players like Okocha and Finidi George, Rashidi Yekini up front, Amunike out wide, bunch of ball players !!!
the likes of Morocco would have been awsome had the Africans not defected to France with Zidane,Nasri etc....
That 1990 Cameroon team went right up in my estimations as soon as that thug violently took out the Argentinian winger in the opener - the one that looked like a scruffy pikey....
